THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (CRICKET EDITION) 4th QUARTER FINAL

The last quarter-final match is playing tonight and after South Africa, India and Australia all through to the semi finals it’s left to either co-host New Zealand or the West Indies who may or may not be with talisman batsman Chris Gayle.

NEW ZEALAND vs WEST INDIES

Up first is New Zealand band The House of Capricorn and their take on alternative stoner doom. The riffs are aggressive, the vocals gruff and angry and the songs rock harder than a bear with rocks. The band certainly know how to pace an album mixing in the occasional doom-paced track in between the faster QOTSA-styled songs.

It’s been quite difficult finding metal or even rock bands from the Caribbean, the music scene is mainly reggae, dancehall or syrupy pop acts, so it’s always good to find a band that will fit this blog piece. Standing Penance are from Barbados and play alternative metal/hard rock with some great vocals and even better harmonies. It’s good stuff if not exactly groundbreaking but enjoyable nonetheless.

PREDICTION: New Zealand will take the final place in the semi-finals. The West Indies have been to inconsistent in the tournament and were fortunate to get into the quarter finals.

Musically, The House of Capricorn win this thanks to there refreshing upbeat take on stoner/doom.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (CRICKET EDITION) GAMES 41/42

So here we are, down to the final two games of the Pool stages and three of the four teams involved have something to play for: a spot in the knockout stages against either the co-hosts or Sri Lanka.

GAME 41: UNITED ARAB EMIRATES vs WEST INDIES

In the vein of Dying Fetus and Aborted comes U.A.E death/thrash band Perversion. From the name and the influences you can probably already hear what they sound like and you’d be right. Manic drumming, pummeling riffs and cookie monster vocals make Perversion  a typical DM act and that’s alright. It’s well played, well produced and an enjoyable way to spend half an hour or so.

From Trindad and Tobago come a rock/metal band called Orange Sky who mix King’s X-style riffing and a S.O.A.D-vibe with splashes of reggae and funk that makes the album quite refreshing, and the Caribbean-accented phrasing in the songs is also tuneful and catchy as hell! And if anyone is going to cover the Scorpions’ reggae-tinged ‘Is There Anybody There?’ it might as well be these guys!

PREDICTION: The West Indies, on paper, look to have the easier of games against an U.A.E side unused to one-dayers and I can’t see them losing to the U.A.E. However will it be enough to go through to the quarter-finals? Musically, the West Indies take this one as well thanks in part to the infectious and joyful songs of Orange Sky.

GAME 42: IRELAND vs PAKISTAN

Lovecraft-inspired funeral doom metal, this piece writes itself, yes? No! Where you would be expecting ponderous bass riffs, doom-laden deep vocals and a bpm slower than a dying tortoise’s heartbeat, Transfiguration (a one man act from Banagher in Ireland) is heavy on atmosphere and even heavier on keyboards and synths, creating an uneasy ambience for the listener. It’s only with the final (and title) track of his 3-track ep, that Transfiguration ‘plays’ by the funeral doom rules, and even then it’s still a creepy listen.  If you enjoy Midnight Odyssey then you will dig this.

Pakistan’s Dusk have been around since ’95 and over that time have dabbled in death/doom, progressive metal, ambient metal and death/thrash in their 20 year existence. For a band that’s been around for so long and have  so many different styles, their back catalogue can be a little hit or miss but they do seem to have songs to suit all occasions!

PREDICTION: This match is do or die for both teams. A win for either will almost guarantee elimination for the other, as long as the west Indies defeat U.A.E which will more than likely happen. For Ireland, it’s a chance to put cricket on the map back home as they have never been this far in a tournament before. They’ve been playing some wonderful cricket and it would be great to see a newer team in the knockout stages rather than the usual suspects. However, I just feel that Pakistan will have a slight edge over Ireland and will qualify (along with the West Indies) for the quarter finals starting 18th March. Musically I’m giving this to Ireland as Transfiguration’s ep has been on repeat the entire time I’ve been writing this post and the songs seem to be seeping slowly into my marrow.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (CRICKET EDITION) GAME 28

Although I’ve been reporting on the Cricket World Cup for the past week or so I’m still not convinced that it is actually real. I’m starting to believe it’s just a gigantic hoax (for what end, I’m not sure) and when I saw the match last night it just seemed to confirm it for me. I mean, it was around 8pm last night when I was watching the so-called ‘live’ game between Scotland and Bangladesh and yet they were playing in the sunlight! How does that happen? You can’t explain that! Also, magnets. How do they fucking work?

GAME 28: INDIA vs WEST INDIES

Today’s game features Pool B leaders India taking on a West Indian side who have to quickly get over their shellacking from South Africa. Should be a very good game.

Indian black metal. Three words I didn’t think I’d be writing today but I clicked on the metal-archives site and found 1833AD, checked them out and passed on the savings to you!  It’s a great slice of black metal that is also very melodic alongside being very heavy and intense.

Check out the full album on the bandcamp page.

Trinidad and Tobago are the islands representing the West Indies today and from that place comes death metal act Lynchpin. Nothing flashy, nothing fancy just good, solid death metal that punches you right in the face.

PREDICTION: It’s hard to see past an victory for India just because they have been so consistent (3 wins from 3 matches) and the WIndies have struggled so far. Musically

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL (CRICKET EDITION) 2015 GAME 18/19

THE WORLD CUP OF CRICKET 2015 GAME 18/19

First of, let me apologise for missing off Game 18’s Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh match yesterday. I would like to blame a poor ability to read the fixtures list for my oversight, however in this ‘blame someone else society’, I’m blaming the fact that Australia and New Zealand are a full day or so ahead of my time zone, ISIS, ISIL, IS, ISOLE, Was (Not Was) and Was but not Was. Sri Lanka won by 92 runs btw. So I’ll do a better more in-depth report next time the two teams are next playing, but for now here are Sri Lankan melodic black/death metal act Spleen Saint and Bangladeshi black/death metal act Jahiliyyah.

Tonight’s match (and there is only one, I’ve double checked!) features two of the biggest names in cricket: South Africa and the West Indies.

GAME 19: SOUTH AFRICA vs WEST INDIES

From Pretoria come melodic black/death metal act They Wither and have a 5-track ep available from Vision of God records. The songs are great, the riffs are tight and catchy and there’s enough light and shade the the songs to keep the listener interested. A band to look out for.

Now the West Indian cricket team was once the most feared cricket teams in the world, (check out the documentary ‘Fire Over Babylon’ for proof) and features the cricket associations of Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands. And with that said I have quite a lot of islands to chose from, so we’ll start with Barbardos and the only band featured on metal-archives: Conrad.  Embeka Anubis is the man behind the black metal act and it’s more than your typical one-man-BM-bedroom act. The use of the pipe organ and some native percussion instruments raise the songs up a notch or two and the lyrical aspect (dealing with Caribbean folklore and mysticism) add a unique angle to the songs (which is pretty good BM) Another interesting act and hopefully in the next release he’ll feature a bit more ‘local’ colour and atmosphere to the songs.

PREDICTION: Both teams have lost one game each so far. SA losing to India and the Windies losing, surprisingly, to Ireland, so a victory today will have push one team to have one foot in the knockout phase and leave the other scrambling to catch up (insightful analysis, eh!). For me, all eyes will be on Gayle and Samuels from the Windies to keep up their good form which saw them both score centuries against Zimbabwe. West Indies win and musically they win too.
