THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAME 34/35/36

As the final weekend of the Pool matches take place, there are still a few places up for grabs. Can the Japanese beat the USA and pip Scotland for second place? (‘Yes’, and ‘No’ respectively) errrr…….and that’s it really. All the places are more or less sorted and so the majority of the remaining games are for pride only so……….here a picture of some rugby players with the ball replaced by a cat.

GAME 34: SAMOA vs SCOTLAND

VOODOO GODS vs ABANDONED STARS

Voodoo Gods are an American/German/Polish combo that play some pretty damn fine death/thrash metal in a similar vein to Vader and Behemoth etc. Damn good for what ails you and the perfect soundtrack for a night of headbanging goodness.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Voodoo_Gods/3540344431

Abandoned Stars are a young Edinburgh band (with a French vocalist and an Italian drummer) who remind me a lot of Firewind, Sonata Arctica, and Stratovarius in their style of music. Heavy metal with some symphonic cheese added to the mix makes for an ideal soundtrack to practice your air guitar in front of the mirror and slightly scare the cat.

https://ouerghrecords.bandcamp.com/album/fragments

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Abandoned_Stars/3540340199

PREDICTION: Unlike the football team, Scotland’s rugby squad will have no problem progressing to the next round by dispatching Samoa quite easily.

Musically, I’m going to wuss-out and call a draw. Both bands are new to me and both bands hit the spot in different ways, which makes me a very happy bunny indeed.

GAME 35: AUSTRALIA vs WALES

AUTUMN’S DAWN vs ANESMWYTHDER

A double dose of depression for you to ……enjoy? Autumn’s Dawn features Tim Yatras (brainchild behind Germ, and ex-member of Austere and Grey Waters to name but a few) and Matthew Bell, guitarist in Bane of Isildur and Troldhaugen, and what a miserably, wonderful listening experience they bring forth! Gorgeous guitar notes, howling vocals and a sense of lovely despair permeate throughout.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Autumn%27s_Dawn/3540380018

http://records.eisenton.de/album/gone

Welsh solo act Anesmwythder is a different kettle of halibut altogether. Musically there’s some great black metal going on but it’s lyrically that sets him apart from others. Depression, dysphoria and body modification, identity issues and other personal experiences with mental illness are some of the subjects he uses for inspiration. A hard, but rewarding listening experience.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Anesmwythder/3540384139

https://anesmwythder.bandcamp.com/releases

PREDICTION: Wales need to win heavily if they are to leap-frog over the Aussies and claim top spot and although I feel they will win, it won’t be by a big enough margin and will have to settle for second spot.

Musically I’m plumping for Autumn’s Dawn slightly ahead of Anesmwythder just on musical variety alone.

GAME 36: ENGLAND vs URUGUAY

NHOR vs VERMIFORNE

I’ve said this once before and I’ll say it again: one of my favourites reasons to do these ‘World Cup’ posts is to discover new bands and new music and the six bands featured in this post are living proof of this. Take Nhor for instance.

hailing from the green fields of Herefordshire, Nhor play a sublime atmospheric/folk black metal, all quiet, chill piano parts lulling you into a dreamy state of mind, conjuring up images  beautiful fields, flowers in bloom and blue skies, until the guitars crash in and you stumble over a rotting corpse or two. Fans of Alcest will enjoy Nhor’s stuff as will fans of Aquilus.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Nhor/3540333774

https://nhor.bandcamp.com/

Vermifone are a different band entirely. Like Sabbath riffs? Enjoy sludgey-doomy goodness? Would you like a crazed Uruguayan sinisterly shouting at you for no reason? Then this is the band for you!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Vermiforme/3540390142

PREDICTION: Both teams have nothing to play for in this game, so I’m going to pick Uruguay just for shits and giggles.

Musically I’m picking Nhor and I’m off to discover his back catalogue on Prophecy Records. As the old advert goes “Nhor- he’s got the Nhor-how!”

(crap joke so here’s another picture of a rugby player holding a kitty!)

awwwwww!

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL (RUGBY EDITION) 2015 GAME 29/30

The famous French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (“Jean-Paul Sartre? One of the best centre-forwards West ‘Am ever ‘ad! By sheer mind power alone he could get the ball into the back of the net! Dead ball situation? Fackin’ ‘ell! He could fackin’ prove the fackin’ ball didn’t fackin’ exist!”) once said “Hell is other people”. He was only partially right, because in this day and age hell is not necessarily other people (and a cracking tune by popular beat combo Half Man Half Biscuit) but it can also be computer failures during the middle of a bloody rugby world cup! And this is the reason why I’ve not been able to update this blog for around a week or so! My loyal hamster, Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, has finally kicked the bucket* (a long shot I know) after seven years of faithful service and so I’ve had to search high and low for a new companion to help complete this mission, and I am proud to announce a new fully-functional hamster I’ve named Toby Gruntsplatter and fired up with a mixture of Red Bull, Rockstar and Monster that I have labelled Red Rockster, we are now fully equipped to continue to seek out and explore strange new bands and new music, to boldly go where no hamster has gone before! So to apologise to my loyal readers (Mrs and Mrs Loyal, 22A Glenrothes Lane, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. Hello Rab and Mary!) here’s a picture of some cute goats!

Yeah, we know we’re cute mofos!

GAME 29: CANADA vs ROMANIA

WILT vs SUNSET IN THE 12TH HOUSE

Wilt hail from the Great Cold North, Manitoba to be exact, and play an atmospheric black metal that seems to encompass the glacial, frozen Canadian countryside and conjures up images of a giant moving slowly through the snowy forests.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Wilt/3540353837

https://wiltmanitoba.bandcamp.com/

A side-project of the guitarists from Dordeduh, Sunset in the 12th House are an instrumental psychedelic post-rock act full of atmosphere, superb musicianship and fantastic songs.great album to kick back and relax to or to help inspire you in front of the canvas.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Sunset_in_the_12th_House/3540397432

https://sunset-in-the-12th-house.bandcamp.com/releases

PREDICTION:

Seeing as both teams have been eliminated, both teams are winless and it’s just pride they are playing for, this should be a pretty open game and seeing as it’s Canada’s last game in the competition, I would imagine there will be a little more of a will to win from the Canucks.

Musically I’m going for Sunset in the 12th House for producing, seemingly from nowhere, one of the best albums of 2015, full of great riffs and blistering guitar solos.

GAME 30: FIJI vs URUGUAY

ENSHINE vs ABYSSAL DIMENSION

Enshine are a Swedish/French duo who play a very lovely style of melodic death/doom metal recalling such great bands like Swallow The Sun, Insomnium and Daylight Dies. Beautiful melodies, great riffs and superb songs makes them a band to check out tout suite!

https://enshine.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Enshine/3540364642

Representing Uruguay is melodic death metal act Abyssal Dimension and pretty decent they are too. Not going to win too many awards for originality but catchy riffs, a good sense of melody and some cracking songs gets a thumbs up from me.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Abyssal_Dimension/3540394868

PREDICTION:

Once again, both teams are eliminated from the tournament, both teams are winless and it’s Fiji’s last game of the competition, I’m getting a Groundhog Day feeling from this game. Fiji have been unlucky not to record a win against three of the strongest teams in the group and I think they will have no problem picking up their first win against a very poor Uruguayan side.

Musically the Fijians can thank the Swedish/French collaboration of Enshine for their victory today.

*No hamsters were harmed during the making of this blog although a few guinea pigs got there feelings hurt.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAME 17/18/19

GAME 17: AUSTRALIA vs URUGUAY

THADDAEUS vs APLANADORA

Thaddaeus are (now) a three piece funeral doom act with traces of gothic doom, ambient married with some lovely classical/orchestral music to push the band above the likes of others in this genre. Similar to some of Dis Pater’s many guises, Thaddaeus’ vocals are reminiscent of Nick Cave and this is what makes me tingle inside!

https://thaddaeusband.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Thaddaeus/3540382238

From Uruguay come Aplanadora, who’s first album featured six Sabbath songs and was called ‘Tributo a Black Sabbath’ so it’s no surprise to discover who they are influenced by! Good old fashioned no-frills meat and potatoes 80’s metal that’s just bloody good fun!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Aplanadora/110631

PREDICTION:

This will be the first meeting between the two nations; Australia are the only Tier One nation that has not had a XV that has faced Uruguay in a Test match. Australia have won five of their last six Tests, this after suffering defeat in six of their seven games before that. After Wales’ victory over England, Australia will be looking to exploit an English defeat and take second (and maybe first) spot and I believe that The Wallabies will do this.

Musically, although Aplanadora are great fun and are a solid metal act however, due to the more textured layers of Thaddaeus’ music I’m giving this win to them.

GAME 18: SCOTLAND vs USA

TRANSCENSION vs ARES KINGDOM

Transcension are a bunch of hairy-arsed Scotsmen from the sunny shores of Greenock (which is a quaint fishing village on the Clyde!) playing some fantastic melodic death metal and with the twin guitar sound and clean vocals they give the songs a power metal/Thin Lizzy-‘Celtic’ feel to them which is very refreshing and something that makes me a fan of their music. Only one album at the moment but damn the quality of the songs make me excited to hear more from these guys!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Transcension/3540398844

Ares Kingdom have been around since 1997 featuring two members of black/trash metal act Order From Chaos. They’ve been releasing consistently great music since 2003 and have a new album out this year………so why I have only just heard about them now? Probably because I’m a freaking idiot! Anyhoo, Ares Kingdom are an excellent death/thrash metal act, in the vein of Bolt Thrower/Hail of Bullets/Blasphemic Cruelty, who many of you will probably be familiar with, for those (like me) who may not know them, i suggest just clicking the youtube link and listen to some amazing metal!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ares_Kingdom/10670

h@ttps://nuclearwarnowproductions.bandcamp.com/album/the-unburiable-dead-2

PREDICTION: Scotland have won all four meetings between the two nations by an average margin of 33 points and I can’t see anything from the USA to make it 5 wins for Scotland and see the Scots retake first place in the Group.

Musically this is very exciting for me. as I’ve discovered two great new bands, even if one of them has been around for a while! Both bands play different variations of death metal: Transcension are more melodic and ‘Celtic’ influenced whilst Ares Kingdom are more experienced, heavier and nastier but both bands have released excellent music. In the end experience wins out for Ares Kingdom (I’m off to buy the new album as soon as I get paid and catch up on their previous stuff) but as for Transcension the future’ looks really bright for them and I’l be hunting down their album too! (See! I don’t always sit on the fence!)

GAME 19: IRELAND vs ROMANIA

SONUS MORTIS vs INDIAN FALL

One of the pleasures of doing these posts is that I get to discover so many new bands and some great music from all over the world and here’s another band I’m thrilled to have found. Kevin Byrne is the brains behind twisted, noisy, symphonic death/doom metal act Sonus Mortis. Aggressive, harsh yet melodic, mixing the power of Aanal Nathrakh with some heavy DM riffs, cool gothic doom passages and nasty vocals makes this a great listening experience.

https://sonusmortis.bandcamp.com/album/war-prophecy

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Sonus_Mortis/3540371908

Romanian metal Indian Falls play atmospheric death/black metal in a similar style to Old Man’s Child, full of melody, great riffs and excellent songwriting.

https://indianfall.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Indian_Fall/9823

PREDICTION:

The Irish have won all 14 games against non-Tier one opposition in the Rugby World Cup; those 14 wins have come by an average margin of 30 points. Ireland defeated Romania by 30 and 28-point margins at the 1999 and 2003 editions of this tournament respectively. the Romanians will probably give the Irish more of a test than the Canadians did but not much more. Ireland for the win.

Musically the Irish will take this again though Indian Fall are no slouches, I just felt more moved by Sonus Mortis.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAMES 6/7/8

Once more with feeling, chaps!

Another busy schedule of games today, so let’s get to it.

GAME 6: SAMOA vs USA

Up first, representing Samoa, are psychedelic doom metal act Cruthu, which means ‘creation’ in Gaelic, a female-fronted four-piece act from Michigan. Whilst their take on 70’s stoner/occult rock is not the most original, they do seem to have a better understanding of how to use the blues in their sound and singer Teri Brown has a good voice on her.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Cruthu/3540395265

https://cruthu.bandcamp.com/releases

Where would heavy metal, and to an even greater extent black metal and it’s off-shoots, be without the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien? If you’ve seen any of my other ‘World Cup of…’ you’ll discover that Tolkien-inspired band names, albums, songs etc are everywhere and now we add another name to the list ; Mirkwood. In Tolkien’s world, Mirkwood is a vast forest in Middle-Earth whereas Mirkwood here is a one man black metal act from California who wears his Summoning and Windir influences on his sleeve and produces some great symphonic bm. There are only a few demos out so far but hopefully a full album will drop soon.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Mirkwood/110865

https://mirkwoodband.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION:

These sides clashed in the pool stages of the 2007 tournament in a match which Samoa triumphed 25-21 and Samoa have featured in every World Cup since 1991 and have won their tournament opener on five of six occasions. Since winning their opening match of the 1987 tournament, USA have lost 18 of 20 Rugby World Cup fixtures including all of their openers since. This is going to be a tough ask of the USA and I feel that they will come up short against such tough opponents. Samoa win.

Musically I’m giving this one to Mirkwood due to his songwriting skills and sense of melody.

GAME 7: WALES vs URUGUAY

Siluria are a Welsh epic folk metal band with touches of melodic doom in their songwriting reminding me a little of Falkenbach. The songs and the riffs are excellent and the clean vocals are some of the best I’ve heard for a while.  Only one ep out at the moment but hopefully that will change soon.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Siluria/3540336546

Representing Uruguay are progressive heavy metal act Contracultura and although they aren’t re-inventing the wheel, their brand of heavy metal is really enjoyable and they manage to keep their prog leanings reigned in on their debut album ‘Inmortal’, with most songs being under 6 minutes or so. Strong songwriting and some inventive riffs makes Contracultura a good listen.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Contracultura/117190

PREDICTION:

This will be the first ever meeting between these sides. Wales have lost successive World Cup matches heading into their 2015 opener; they’ve never lost three in a row. Uruguay have a points difference of -254 in their seven Rugby World Cup matches, conceding 352 points and scoring 98. Wales will need to get off to a good start if they want to escape from a group that features both England and Australia and I believe that they will get that win.

Musically it’s a victory for the welsh also as Siluria’s epic folk metal charms win the day.

GAME 8: NEW ZEALAND vs ARGENTINA

Heavy metal act West of Hell play no-nonsense thrash metal similar to the Bay Area classic bands of the ’80’s: Testament, Exodus etc. fronted by Zimmer’s Hole and ex-SYL singer Chris Valagao, West of Hell grab your throat from the opening riff of their debut album, ‘Spiral Empire’, and don’t let go for the next 50-odd minutes. Good, old-fashioned kick-arse thrash metal.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/West_of_Hell/3540346155

Argentina’s 2112 changed their name from Fahrenheit in 1986 to their current moniker in honour of Rush (no big surprise there) and whilst they take some of their musical cues from the Canadian rock gods, 2112 also channel a modern, commercial Yes-vibe to their songs, along with some Dream Theatre influences, though fortunately most of their songs last under 7 minutes!.  Great riffs, great songs and some excellent musicianship all adds to a great listen.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/2112/16700

PREDICTION:

A reigning champion has lost their opening game of a World Cup just once, when 1991 winners Australia were beaten in the opening game of 1995 by South Africa. This will be the third World Cup meeting between these two teams; New Zealand won both previous games by a margin of at least 23 points and Argentina have taken New Zealand on 21 times previously; never recording a victory (D1 L20). The All Blacks have won seven of their last eight matches in England (L1). Given all that information I think it’s pretty certain which way I’m going to go on this one! The All Blacks to kick off the defence of their title with a victory.

On the musical side however, I have to go for a tie. Both bands, whilst not ground breaking, are very good, have some excellent songs and are pretty enjoyable to listen to and are both worth checking out.

THE METAL WORLD CUP DAY EIGHT (when rock’n’roll was created)

My mate wears the same jacket when he’s impersonating either Matt Damon or Hugh Jackman.
Maybe he’s Bourne with it, maybe it’s Wolverine…

The jokes will continue until morale improves!

COLOMBIA vs IVORY COAST

YOGOTH SOTHOTH vs ALPHA BLONDY

Going by the name and the song titles on their albums, Yogoth Sothoth lyrics are influenced by H.P.Lovecraft and they play pretty decent death metal. Nothing earth shattering but decent. (My knowledge of Colombian metal is woeful isn’t it?)

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Yogth_Sothoth/56844#Reviews

Alpha Blondy is a reggae singer from the Ivory Coast and he has recorded over a dozen albums of quite pleasant reggae (my knowledge of Ivorian reggae is even more scant than my knowledge of Colombian metal!)

Verdict: In a shock result Ivory Coast take this mainly due to the bagpipe sound in his cover version of ‘Wish You Were Here’.

JAPAN vs GREECE

CHURCH OF MISERY vs RAVENCULT

CoM write songs solely about real-life serial killers and set it to Black Sabbath-inspired doom metal. And when I say it’s Sabbath-inspired, not only are the guitar riffs and bass riffs are inspired by Birmingham’s finest but Church of Misery have also taken the stuff that had influenced early Sabbath records. Sabbath grew up with the ’60’s rhythm and blues beat-boom in the UK  and CoM have taken those influences and manifest them in their songwriting and playing.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Church_of_Misery/763#Reviews

Ravencult play no-frills, filthy black metal and that is not a bad thing at all. Similar to Nifelheim, Watain and early Vemon with a nod or two to the mighty Motorhead, Ravencult aren’t doing anything groundbreaking but when they do things this well, who needs innovation?

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ravencult/5690#Reviews

verdict: Japan take this cos everyone love a bad boy, don’t they?

URUGUAY vs ENGLAND

UPON SHADOWS vs ORANGE GOBLIN

Upon Shadows are a two piece all female dark, gothic metal band from Uruguay. Their style of music is not something I listen to often but it’s a little different and I’m always open to discovering new things.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Upon_Shadows/32404

Are you after cool, energetic riffs, Missing Kyuss and Sleep? Want a home-grown (ie English) stoner band that knows the secret formula to great songs is riffs + melody? Ladies and gentlemen, 19 years old and seven albums strong, I present to you Orange Goblin!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Orange_Goblin/1703#band_tab_discography

verdict: Although Upon Shadows are really quite good, I’m always a sucker for home-growm bands, so Orange Goblin for the win!

THE METAL WORLD CUP DAY III HENRY V

So after living in the U.S. for the past 5 years or so, I’ve still not got used to the east coast/west coat time difference! Hence the previous post was posted after the Mexico/Cameroon game and halfway through the Spain/Netherlands game (just after Robben scored a beauty! GIRFUY Spain!) So in future I’ll try to post the posts BEFORE the games! Neat idea, eh readers? Four games, eight countries, lots of music. Let’s get intae ’em!

COLOMBIA vs GREECE

INQUISITION vs HAIL SPIRIT NOIR

Colombian giants, Inquisition are a two piece that play black metal and play it bloody well! The music is cold, brooding, grim, violent, all the usual adjectives yet what makes them really stand out is the vocals of lead singer/bassist/guitarist Dagon. A mixture of harsh, raspy vocals, Tuvan-esque throat singing and Popeye! Honestly! Yet somehow it works, listen for yourself.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Inquisition/6665#Reviews

Hail Spirit Noir are formed from the remnants of another progressive avant-garde metal band Transcending Bizarre? (the question mark is deliberate!) and have two albums to their name. Black metal mixed with 70’s rock and psychedelia and a sense of humour makes for a very satisfying listen time and time again. I love bands that takes chances and aren’t afraid to experiment and Hail Spirit Noir fit that bill majestically.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Hail_Spirit_Noir/3540343083

IVORY COAST vs JAPAN

Ivory Coast have no metal acts, so for your listening pleasure here is Manou Gallo and a track called Maisha taken from her 2003 album ‘Dida’

Sigh are probably the very definition of ‘eclectic’ in heavy metal circles. A band who’s ‘everything-including-the-kitchen-sink’ attitude to music is very refreshing (to my ears). They are not afraid to take chances and this fearlessness producing some excellent music and essential albums. Bands in a similar vein include Hail Spirit Noir and a great French band called Way to End (more on them soon).

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Sigh/51#Reviews

URUGUAY vs COSTA RICA

REQUIEM AETERNAM vs ADVENT OF BEDLAM

I know next to nothing about either of these countries’ metal scene and I won’t pretend I will. So I picked six bands whose names I liked and decided to have at it!

RA (from Uruguay) are signed to Century Media, have three full length releases and play pretty decent melodic black/death metal. Pretty good stuff.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Requiem_Aeternam/10268#band_tab_discography

AoB (from Costa Rica) were originally called December’s Cold Winter (which is a cool name-no pun intended!) and changed names in 2009 and have released two albums of damn fine melodic death metal and have been a very pleasant discovery for post.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Advent_of_Bedlam/3540311576

ENGLAND vs ITALY

MEADS OF ASPHODEL vs MELENCOLIA ESTATICA

Ah, the English! Has there ever been a more misunderstood and maligned nation of mongrels? For the record I’m half-English, half-Scottish, which probably explains the self-loathing! And England has been a mongrel nation since the Roman Occupation: Romans, Jutes, Britons, Angles, Saxons, Celts, Normans, Danes, bitch please! We were doing multicultralism before it went mainstream (#ethnic hipster)

Anyway the Meads are, yet again, another one of those bands that play experimental/avant garde black metal and occasional feature ex-Hawkwind guitarist Alan davey and the lead singer from Sigh. Their lyrics deal with various religious issues (particulary focusing on the crusades), war, death, biblical apocrypha and their past two releases were ‘concept’ albums about the murder of Jesus the Jew and then about the jews that were forced to work in the Nazi death camps to aid with the disposal of the gas chamber victims. All good clean fun (whatever that means)

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/The_Meads_of_Asphodel/3235

ME hail from Italy and is the solo project of Climaxia from Absentia Lunae. Her latest album ‘Hel’ is a great slab of depressive, claustrphobic black metal and is lyrically and visually inspired by the Fritz Lang movie ‘Metropolis’ and is well worth checking out.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Melencolia_Estatica/58390#Reviews
