THE EURO 2016 TOURNAMENT OF METAL (DAY FOUR)

Day four and already there’s been tears, fights, bloodied faces and threats of expulsion, oh and England fans showing the Democrats in Nevada, USA what real chair throwing looks like! What a wonderful spectacle this is! Onwards, ever onwards….

GAME EIGHT: SPAIN vs CZECH REPUBLIC

CRYSTAL MOORS vs QUERCUS

Crystal Moors are a pagan/celtic black metal act from Santander and manage to balance the folk elements with the metal elements without either overpowering each other and allowing for some great songs to emerge, leaving the listener very happy indeed.

https://crystalmoors.bandcamp.com/

Quercus are a new band to me, playing funeral doom metal with some avant-garde touches. Their latest album, Heart With Bread, opens with a 22-minute track and ends with a cover of Robert Burns’ ‘My Heart Is In The Highlands’. The whole album is superb; lots of prog-ish moments; think Vincent Crane-meets Peter Gabriel-era Genesis but way slower. Oh, the metal is there most definitely: the riffs are huge, the atmosphere is doom-laden and the organ is the most prevalent instrument throughout.

PREDICTION: Current holders Spain kick off their defence of the trophy with a tough match against a talented Czech Republic side, who won in 1976 (as Czechoslovakia) and reached the quarter-finals in 2012. It’ll be a good game and ultimately a draw 1-1.

Musically, although Crystal Moors are a great folk/metal band and a cut above most acts in the genre, Quercus win this one simply because their album is one of the best I’ve heard all year. Still going to check out Crystal Moors at a later date.

GAME NINE: REP OF IRELAND vs SWEDEN

LADY MAGGOT vs HEAD OF THE DEMON

Lady Maggot (such a nice name) are a gothic/progressive death metal duo based in Dublin, Ireland but hailing originally from Poland. This is the kind of European union I can get behind. If you’re missing new material from Madder Mortem (six years since the last album) then you could do a lot worse than give Lady Maggot some time.

https://lady-maggot.bandcamp.com/

Head of the Demon mix doom and black metal motifs with nods to occult rock acts like Jess and the Ancient Ones mixed with Mortuary Drape with Tom G. Warrior-esque vocals to produce a pretty damn fine listening experience. More occult rock/metal than metal but still great all the same.

PREDICTION: ZLATAN! ZLATAN! ZLATAN! Can you guess who I’m picking? Sweden 3-1

Musically, I’m inclined to go for Head of the Demon over Lady Maggot. No real reason, it’s just there is something about the occult rock riffs of HotD that speak to me.

GAME TEN: BELGIUM vs ITALY

ELEANORA vs MESSA

Shouty sludge-y post hardcore from the land of chocolate, beer and fat cat politicians. The soundtrack to overthrowing the system. Similar to Thou etc. Good stuff indeed!

2016 is shaping up to be a stellar year for metal and Italy’s Messa are continuing that trend of excellent debut albums. Bluesy occult doom (with touches of ambient and drone) with enchanting female vocals that will have you cavorting naked in the woods on the next full moon.

https://messa666.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: For some reason, I believe this will be the game of the tournament so far. I know, it doesn’t have too much competition but both teams have pedigree and this is one of the best Belgium sides since the 80’s. If the Belgiums score first then it will force the Azzurri to come out and play (to quote Dee Snider). However, the longer it goes scoreless, the more chance Italy will sneak a goal and snuff out the game. Errmmmmmm………3-2 Belgium (he types optimistically)

Musically, Messa take this one with their blend of occult doom rock/metal. See you on the next full moon (clothing optional)

THE METAL WORLD CUP DAY SEVEN

I could have been a professional footballer just like my father. He could have been a professional footballer too. *Silence. Tumbleweeds tumble past*. On with the show!

CAMEROON vs  CROATIA

RICHARD BONA vs S.O.M.

Richard Bona is a jazz bassist who has played with Bobby McFerrin and has released 7 studio albums of mellow jazz fusion which sometimes can stray into muzak.

S.o.M (which stands for Sons of Medjimurje.) hail from Croatia  and are currently a three piece folk/doom metal act. The pace is slow, the guitars toll like church bells and the vocals (both male and female) are filled with heartbreak and loss.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/S.o.M./123106#band_tab_discography

Verdict: Predictably,  Croatia take this one.

AUSTRALIA vs NETHERLANDS

ELYSIAN BLAZE vs CARACH ANGREN

Elysian Blaze is another one man black funeral doom act from Oz (must be something in the water) and is one of the most consistent acts, in terms of output, around today. Each album release has seen the production, the musicianship and, more importantly the songwriting improve no end and this results in more grandiose and epic songs as featured below:

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Elysian_Blaze/17646#Reviews

Dutch symphonic black metallers Carach Angren have probably provided us with the most ‘whatthefuckery?’ moment of this blog! The music is in a similar vein to Dimmu Borgir and Cradle etc, but it’s the video that has the most ‘WTF?’-moments-per-minute since I first saw the Black Satans’ videos that really stands out. I like the band, I like the music but sometimes you can understand why most of the metal videos I’ve posted are just pictures of album covers or band photos!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Carach_Angren/28907

Verdict: Elysian Blaze win it for the Aussies but by jingo the video for Carach Angren is a comedy masterpiece!

SPAIN vs CHILE

TEITANBLOOD vs THY SERPENT’S CULT

You want fast, hard, brutal, extreme death metal? Then look no further than Spain’s Teitanblood. Honestly this is just vicious, face ripping stuff that is just sick and nasty! Enjoy!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Teitanblood/20242#Reviews

Some more nasty, death metal courtesy of Chilean band Thy Serpent’s Cult. Nasty riffing, ferocious drumming and some great death growls shows that this band can hold their own with their more illustrious counterparts from ‘el Norte’.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Thy_Serpent%27s_Cult/3540309915

verdict: Thy Serpent’s Cult are great but Teitanblood just cranks it up nastier, faster, filthier, harsher, so victory to the Spanairds!

The Metal World Cup DAY TWO

3 games today so there’s no preamble, just music.

MEXICO vs CAMEROON

YAOTL MICTLAN vs MANU DIBANGO

Yaotl Mictlan are a Mexican folk/black metal band that combines black / death metal with elements of indigenous Mexican Aztec and Mayan music such as flutes, rattles and tribal drumming and have two full length albums out.  This is a track from the 2010 album ‘Dentro del Mantro Gris de Chaac’.

According to the Metal-Archives site there are no metal bands from Cameroon (or Nigeria, Ivory Coast or Ghana) so for these four African nations I’ll be playing some of their most famous musicians to hail from that country. First up Manu Dibango.

According to his Wiki page, Manu is a saxophonist and vibraphone player who fuses jazz, funk and traditional Cameroonian music. This is him with Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

SPAIN vs NETHERLANDS

HORN OF THE RHINO vs AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN

HOTR play a lovely mix of sludge/doom/death metal. The bass just rumbles at you from out the speakers and grabs onto your throat demanding attention, and by jingo you give it!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Horn_of_the_Rhino/3540310927

AAFCC are a Dutch post-black metal band from Friesland. They’re a band that I should know more about but unfortunately I don’t. However doing research for this blog I’m going to be rectifying that soon!

CHILE VS AUSTRALIA

ANIMUS MORTIS vs MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY

AM are a black Metal band from Chile who I’d never heard of before doing research for this blog, though to be fair my knowledge of South American metal, let alone Chilean metal, was virtually non existent! This is a great slab of cold, black metal to rival most European BM bands.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Animus_Mortis/32420#Reviews

Dis Pater is the brains behind the ambient BM band Midnight Odyssey as well as side projects, Tempestuous Falls and The Crevices Below though these bands are now retired so Dis Pater can focus on his first band Midnight Odyssey. Despite the ‘one-man BM band’ stigma/stereotype, Midnight Odyssey’s music always appears to be positive and uplifting (to my ears) and has a lot of great energy and riffs and some wonderful ambient passages before crashing in with some scorching guitars and pounding drums.
