THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAME 34/35/36

As the final weekend of the Pool matches take place, there are still a few places up for grabs. Can the Japanese beat the USA and pip Scotland for second place? (‘Yes’, and ‘No’ respectively) errrr…….and that’s it really. All the places are more or less sorted and so the majority of the remaining games are for pride only so……….here a picture of some rugby players with the ball replaced by a cat.

GAME 34: SAMOA vs SCOTLAND

VOODOO GODS vs ABANDONED STARS

Voodoo Gods are an American/German/Polish combo that play some pretty damn fine death/thrash metal in a similar vein to Vader and Behemoth etc. Damn good for what ails you and the perfect soundtrack for a night of headbanging goodness.

Abandoned Stars are a young Edinburgh band (with a French vocalist and an Italian drummer) who remind me a lot of Firewind, Sonata Arctica, and Stratovarius in their style of music. Heavy metal with some symphonic cheese added to the mix makes for an ideal soundtrack to practice your air guitar in front of the mirror and slightly scare the cat.

PREDICTION: Unlike the football team, Scotland’s rugby squad will have no problem progressing to the next round by dispatching Samoa quite easily.

Musically, I’m going to wuss-out and call a draw. Both bands are new to me and both bands hit the spot in different ways, which makes me a very happy bunny indeed.

GAME 35: AUSTRALIA vs WALES

AUTUMN’S DAWN vs ANESMWYTHDER

A double dose of depression for you to ……enjoy? Autumn’s Dawn features Tim Yatras (brainchild behind Germ, and ex-member of Austere and Grey Waters to name but a few) and Matthew Bell, guitarist in Bane of Isildur and Troldhaugen, and what a miserably, wonderful listening experience they bring forth! Gorgeous guitar notes, howling vocals and a sense of lovely despair permeate throughout.

Welsh solo act Anesmwythder is a different kettle of halibut altogether. Musically there’s some great black metal going on but it’s lyrically that sets him apart from others. Depression, dysphoria and body modification, identity issues and other personal experiences with mental illness are some of the subjects he uses for inspiration. A hard, but rewarding listening experience.

PREDICTION: Wales need to win heavily if they are to leap-frog over the Aussies and claim top spot and although I feel they will win, it won’t be by a big enough margin and will have to settle for second spot.

Musically I’m plumping for Autumn’s Dawn slightly ahead of Anesmwythder just on musical variety alone.

GAME 36: ENGLAND vs URUGUAY

NHOR vs VERMIFORNE

I’ve said this once before and I’ll say it again: one of my favourites reasons to do these ‘World Cup’ posts is to discover new bands and new music and the six bands featured in this post are living proof of this. Take Nhor for instance.

hailing from the green fields of Herefordshire, Nhor play a sublime atmospheric/folk black metal, all quiet, chill piano parts lulling you into a dreamy state of mind, conjuring up images ┬ábeautiful fields, flowers in bloom and blue skies, until the guitars crash in and you stumble over a rotting corpse or two. Fans of Alcest will enjoy Nhor’s stuff as will fans of Aquilus.

Vermifone are a different band entirely. Like Sabbath riffs? Enjoy sludgey-doomy goodness? Would you like a crazed Uruguayan sinisterly shouting at you for no reason? Then this is the band for you!

PREDICTION: Both teams have nothing to play for in this game, so I’m going to pick Uruguay just for shits and giggles.

Musically I’m picking Nhor and I’m off to discover his back catalogue on Prophecy Records. As the old advert goes “Nhor- he’s got the Nhor-how!”

(crap joke so here’s another picture of a rugby player holding a kitty!)

awwwwww!

WE’RE ALL DOOMED AGAIN! (Once More With Feeling)

private-frazer-says-were-doomed

(And we’re live in 3……2……1………….)

Sliding back again into the doom saddle and presenting 4 bands for your delectation it’s your hostess with the mostess…………………………….ME!

Starting off in Chile with a new band named A Sad Bada, who have their debut album out now and it’s pretty damn fine. Funeral doom mixing with some post-rock moments make for a fine pairing and the vocals are nice and gruff, suiting the overall vibe of the music. My only criticism is the poor production: bass too low and the drums are too loud and tinny with kind of detracts from the songs, which are excellent.

Up next are a German band called A Sickness Unto Death who have a very Daylight Dies/Katatonia vibe about them and clean vocals throughout their songs, which makes a interesting change from the growls and deep vocals usually associated with some doom metal. Their debut album is available now at their website and a new album is promised soon.

We leave Germany and make our way over the border to France (and not for the first time in Franco-Germanic history!) and to a great band with an even better name: A Very Old Ghost Behind The Farm.  Breaking down the lines between doom, sludge, blackened metal, crust and stoner metal, AVOGBTF deals with darkness and horror and exude an air of menace and despair in their songs.

Finally away up north to Norway we find a side-project from Carpathian Forest’s guitarist Vrangsinn and what a bizarre side project it is! Describing themselves as ‘Groovy Depressive PopRockMetal, A Waste of Talent have their debut album available for free download from their website (link below) and it’s a mixture of doom, the Cure, Morphine (especially the saxophone), 70’s psychedelic rock, some Super Furry Animals and despair! They do promise a second album soon but as they’ve managed to record 2 songs in 3 years, expect the follow up sometime around 2022!

DOOMED AND STONED IN PORTLAND- Free Bandcamp Release.

This post is dedicated to the inventor of anagrams who sadly died this week. May he erect a penis.

So, whilst preparing for my next ‘We’re Doomed’ post, I stumbled across this little beauty on bandcamp. It’s a 73, (yes 73!) track, free to download, compilation that features some of the best heavy music artists currently plying their trade in Portland. It’s an excellent mixture of metal, doom, sludge, stoner, weird experimental shit and punk that will have something for everyone over it’s 429 minute running time. I recommend small chunks at a time! The creator of the compilation, a one Billy Goat, gives his reasoning behind it being a free to download thing: ”

Our intention in using Bandcamp for this compilation is to get new and local heavy music out to as many people as possible at no charge (just enter “0” when it asks you how much you want to pay). Because Bandcamp limits the number of free downloads to 200, we will periodically purchase more (so far, the number of free downloads has exceeded 2,000). Please do not feel obligated to pay for this compilation in any way. Instead, redirect your dollars to the bands themselves. Click individual tracks for relevant links to support the bands. Thank you for making this thriving scene possible!”

So there you have it, straight from the ……goat’s mouth, as it were. Below is the Bandcamp link and then just a few of my favourite tracks from the comp. Feast your ears and enjoy!

WE’RE ALL DOOOOOOOMED- AGAIN!

private-frazer-says-were-doomed

I had the great privilege of meeting Sir Elton John this week. He’s a very cultured, educated and intelligent man but one thing he didn’t know was the French word for ‘mouse’. For Sir Elton, ‘souris’ seems to be the hardest word.

Continuing my A-Z trawl through doom metal acts (courtesy of the ‘genre’ button on M-A) with leave the parentheses bands behind and start to feature acts that still don’t begin with the letter ‘A’!

First up is Finnish band 0XiST (pronounced ‘zero exist’) who have great dark, doomy riffs coming out of every pore and a killer guitar sound.

Next up is a sludge/doom act from the UK called 11 Paranoias. Only formed two years ago and featuring members of Ramesses and Bong, 11 Paranoias have an ep and one full length album out and available from ritualproductions.net. A wailing cacophony of noise that seems to hit all the right spots.

To round off this trio we head east to Poland and to discover the wonderfully named five piece band, 71TonMan. Great slow doomy riffs complement the fiery insanity of the female vocals and with songs titled ‘Bacon Bomb’, ‘Cyborg Jesus’ and ‘Dr.Psycho’ what’s not to love?
