THE EURO 2016 TOURNAMENT OF METAL (DAY FIVE)

So, the last two matches of the first week sees Group F’s four teams play and maybe, fingers crossed, one team (or more) may score more than 2 goals in the game!

GAME ELEVEN: AUSTRIA vs HUNGARY

HORIZONIST vs ZIVATAR

Horizonist are a gothic/doom tinged outfit from Austria, utilising Pete Steele-esque vocals over heavy riffs and some tasty bass work to produce a quit enjoyable listen. Nothing revolutionary but good just the same.

Zivatar is a one-man atmospheric doom act from Hungary who adds some industrial touches that add a sense of foreboding to his songs. He also uses a lot of spoken samples that adds another level of creepiness to the album. Best listened with headphones.

PREDICTION:  As my predictions are falling by the wayside, I’m going to double down and say that this will be the highest scoring game so far: 4-3 to Austria.

Musically, I was quite engaged with Zivatar and his take on atmospheric/industrial/sample-laden doom.

GAME TWELVE: PORTUGAL vs ICELAND

Tongues of Dying Men play polka-infused folk meta……nah I’m just kidding, they play black metal. Not just black metal, the type that ToDM play starts off quite mellow and melodic and when the drums and guitar kicks in it turns into a slow to mid-paced pretty good BM. Worth investigating.

When checking out groups for these blog posts I was amazed by the amount of excellent metal acts that are from Iceland. Almyrkvi are an atmospheric BM act that have released a great ep that you really need to listen to. I’m not great at putting my thoughts and emotions into words but I do know good music when I hear it, and this is very good!

PREDICTION: Without Christiano Ronaldo, Portugal are a bog-average side. With Ronaldo, Portugal are a bog-average side with a world class player who will fluke a spawny 1-0 over a very good, organised Icelandic team (I hope I’m wrong and Iceland win)

THE METAL WORLD CUP DAY ELEVEN

DAY ELEVEN: and I want to thank my new followers and hope that I keep producing posts that are entertaining and educational (just like a Bruce Willis movie).  In other news, the England football team visited an orphanage in Rio today.
“Its heartbreaking to see all those sad little faces with no hope” said Lucas, aged 6.

USA vs PORTUGAL

MIDNIGHT vs IRONSWORD

Although they’ve been around for over ten years, Cleveland band Midnight have only just be releasing their second album on 19th August (No Mercy For Mayhem available on Hells Headbangers Records http://shop-hellsheadbangers.com/midnight.asp). Mixing classic heavy metal, punk and hard rock and showing their Motorhead/venom influences, they produce some of the filthiest metal sleaze out there today.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Midnight/46617

Ironsword are a band I discovered whilst doing these posts (one of many!) and once again I’m happy that I started this Metal World Cup thingy. Ironsword play heavy metal. No more no less, just straight up good old fashioned heavy metal featuring tales of brave warriors, bloody battles and fantastic heroes. There’s a lot of the ‘3M’ influences in their sound (Maiden, Manowar, Manilla Road) and it sounds like it could have been released in ’85 not the 2000’s but it never sounds derivative.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ironsword/1736#Reviews

verdict: this is a draw. I cannot split the two bands because they both take me back to being a young lad first getting into metal and both bands put a big smile on my face and throw my horns into the air.

BELGIUM vs RUSSIA

PANTHEIST vs AMBER TEARS

Pantheist started out as a funeral doom act and whilst they still play doom but have now added a gothic and progressive element to their sound which has opened up their songwriting.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Pantheist/3698#Reviews

Amber Tears are a Russian doom metal outfit that have lush, beautiful songs filled with despair and loss and evoking images of tearful goodbyes in the snow. They are similar in style to Draconian but without the female vocals and are well worth checking out if you are into melodious doom metal.

SOUTH KOREA vs ALGERIA

TAEKAURY vs BARBAROS

Taekaury play pagan black metal from South Korea. There’s not a lot of information available (that I can find) about this one-man band. From his blog spot and press releases he is interested in the old Korean past of warriors and samurai. The music is excellent, the debut album is a great piece of pagan black metal and I hope to get to hear more stuff by Taekaury.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Taekaury/3540379248

Barbaros play some great raw, black metal from a country that is not known for metal acts let alone BM bands. (23 acts are listed on metal-archives, only 13 are still listed as active!) Again it’s nothing ground breaking but it is a cut above most of the stuff out there.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Barbaros/14079

verdict: Taekaury because whether you’re singing about Vikings, Romans, Barbarians or Samurais, metal is the only apt choice of music to set it to.

THE METAL WORLD CUP DAY V: Biting Off More Than I Can Chew

This has been one of the most enjoyable World Cups so far, in my memory which stretches back to 1974! In fact I’ve not been this excited about the games since Italia ’90. Great games, exciting football and a plethora of goals to satisfy everyone (that’ll be the kiss of death then!). And I’ve just realised how insane this blog post is. In the group stages there are 32 teams, each playing 3 games and that means I’ll be featuring 96 (32 x 3) different bands and then when the knockout stages occur I’ll be featuring a further 32 musical acts! Insane but at the same time quite enjoyable (when the spotty internet connection decides to work!) Enough of my bitching, let’s rock!

IRAN vs NIGERIA

COLD CRY vs FELA KUTI

Metal from Iran? Black metal from Iran? Oh yes, my friend very much so! Cold Cry are one of the few metal acts from Iran (47 active metal acts according to metal-archives.com) and play black metal with doom and ambient influences. They have two demos  and a split album with fellow Iranians stalwarts Mogh, pleastanly titled ‘Islam Is Dead’ Nice!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Cold_Cry/3540312766#band_tab_discography

Fela Kuti was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and political activist who was the father of what is called afrobeat, which is a complex fusion of JazzFunk, Ghanaian/Nigerian High-lifepsychedelic rock, and traditional West African chants and rhythms. Afrobeat also borrows heavily from the native “tinker pan” African-style percussion that Kuti acquired while studying in Ghana with Hugh Masekela , under the uncanny Hedzoleh Soundz. Afrobeat is characterized by a fairly large band with many instruments, vocals, and a musical structure featuring jazzy, funky horn sections. A riff-based “endless groove” is used, in which a base rhythm of drums, shekere, muted West African-style guitar, and melodic bass guitar riffs are repeated throughout the song. Commonly, interlocking melodic riffs and rhythms are introduced one by one, building the groove bit-by-bit and layer-by-layer. The horn section then becomes prominent, introducing other riffs and main melodic themes. Fela’s music is rich, diverse and very satisfying and all albums are essential purchases.

GHANA vs USA

OSIBISA vs SATAN’S HOST

Osibisa are a Ghanaian afro-pop band founded in 1969. They fuse African, Caribbean, jazz, rock, R&B (the good kind) and funk to produce some highly infectious music that can make the most whitest of white boys shake his rump!

Satan’s Host seem the most apt act to feature for the U.S. in this blog as most of the rest of the world consider the States to be the ‘Great Satan’.

sidenote: ‘The Great Satans’ would be an excellent nickname for the U.S. soccer team. Ghana are the ‘Black Stars’; Nigeria ‘The Super Eagles’; Cameroon ‘The Indomitable Lions’ so why not?

Satan’s Host play some great old-school heavy metal (the kind I grew up with in the early ’80’s) mixed in with some blackened power metal, high vocals and some amazing drum work and lyrics that are overtly ‘satanic’, mind you with a name like that you’d hardly except the lyrics to be hippy-dippy ‘boy-meets-girl-and-falls-in-love’ tosh, now do you? The vocalist Harry Conklin (ex-Jag Panzer) is outstanding and once again, all their albums are pretty much essential heavy metal listening.

GERMANY vs PORTUGAL

FALKENBACH vs MIDNIGHT PRIEST

A one-man band from Germany, Falkenbach is a Black/Viking/Folk metal artist with half a dozen full length albums to his name. The music is dramatic, with plenty of atmosphere and epic tales of Norse mythology.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Falkenbach/1071

Midnight Priest are another traditional heavy metal playing like it’s 1985! The good thing about them is their energy and that they sing in their native Portuguese. I do prefer acts that sing in their native tongue as opposed to English, due to the fact that if their knowledge of the English language is not strong, the lyrics can be unintentionally hilarious (“if you are a false, do not entry!” anyone?) whereas singing in the native language can evoke more emotion AND make the singer sound more confident. Anyway here’s their 2009 ep with some interesting cover art.
