THE EURO 2016 TOURNAMENT OF METAL (DAY FOUR)

Day four and already there’s been tears, fights, bloodied faces and threats of expulsion, oh and England fans showing the Democrats in Nevada, USA what real chair throwing looks like! What a wonderful spectacle this is! Onwards, ever onwards….

GAME EIGHT: SPAIN vs CZECH REPUBLIC

CRYSTAL MOORS vs QUERCUS

Crystal Moors are a pagan/celtic black metal act from Santander and manage to balance the folk elements with the metal elements without either overpowering each other and allowing for some great songs to emerge, leaving the listener very happy indeed.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/CrystalMoors/11545

https://crystalmoors.bandcamp.com/

Quercus are a new band to me, playing funeral doom metal with some avant-garde touches. Their latest album, Heart With Bread, opens with a 22-minute track and ends with a cover of Robert Burns’ ‘My Heart Is In The Highlands’. The whole album is superb; lots of prog-ish moments; think Vincent Crane-meets Peter Gabriel-era Genesis but way slower. Oh, the metal is there most definitely: the riffs are huge, the atmosphere is doom-laden and the organ is the most prevalent instrument throughout.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Quercus/13279

https://quercusdoom.bandcamp.com/releases

PREDICTION: Current holders Spain kick off their defence of the trophy with a tough match against a talented Czech Republic side, who won in 1976 (as Czechoslovakia) and reached the quarter-finals in 2012. It’ll be a good game and ultimately a draw 1-1.

Musically, although Crystal Moors are a great folk/metal band and a cut above most acts in the genre, Quercus win this one simply because their album is one of the best I’ve heard all year. Still going to check out Crystal Moors at a later date.

GAME NINE: REP OF IRELAND vs SWEDEN

LADY MAGGOT vs HEAD OF THE DEMON

Lady Maggot (such a nice name) are a gothic/progressive death metal duo based in Dublin, Ireland but hailing originally from Poland. This is the kind of European union I can get behind. If you’re missing new material from Madder Mortem (six years since the last album) then you could do a lot worse than give Lady Maggot some time.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Lady_Maggot/3540404016

https://lady-maggot.bandcamp.com/

Head of the Demon mix doom and black metal motifs with nods to occult rock acts like Jess and the Ancient Ones mixed with Mortuary Drape with Tom G. Warrior-esque vocals to produce a pretty damn fine listening experience. More occult rock/metal than metal but still great all the same.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Head_of_the_Demon/3540354629

https://headofthedemon.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: ZLATAN! ZLATAN! ZLATAN! Can you guess who I’m picking? Sweden 3-1

Musically, I’m inclined to go for Head of the Demon over Lady Maggot. No real reason, it’s just there is something about the occult rock riffs of HotD that speak to me.

GAME TEN: BELGIUM vs ITALY

ELEANORA vs MESSA

Shouty sludge-y post hardcore from the land of chocolate, beer and fat cat politicians. The soundtrack to overthrowing the system. Similar to Thou etc. Good stuff indeed!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Eleanora/3540381797

https://eleanoramusic.bandcamp.com/

2016 is shaping up to be a stellar year for metal and Italy’s Messa are continuing that trend of excellent debut albums. Bluesy occult doom (with touches of ambient and drone) with enchanting female vocals that will have you cavorting naked in the woods on the next full moon.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Messa/3540411369

https://messa666.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: For some reason, I believe this will be the game of the tournament so far. I know, it doesn’t have too much competition but both teams have pedigree and this is one of the best Belgium sides since the 80’s. If the Belgiums score first then it will force the Azzurri to come out and play (to quote Dee Snider). However, the longer it goes scoreless, the more chance Italy will sneak a goal and snuff out the game. Errmmmmmm………3-2 Belgium (he types optimistically)

Musically, Messa take this one with their blend of occult doom rock/metal. See you on the next full moon (clothing optional)

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAME 37/38/39/40

The last weekend of the Pool matches features only one game that has any meaning, (especially after Scotland have nixed any chance Japan had of progressing) and that is France vs Ireland. However there’s still a shed load of great music to explore and enjoy.

GAME 37: ARGENTINA vs NAMIBIA

UNSEEN vs GOD EAT GOD

Fusing funeral doom with black metal vocals, Argentina’s Unseen takes us on quite an unpleasant journey. Glacial pace combined with huge, monolithic riffs and  mixing traditional funeral doom growls with black metal shrieks make for fun times!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Unseen/3540401151

https://dir666.bandcamp.com/album/necrospheric

I picked God Eat God for two reasons: 1) the name and 2) because they play funeral doom/death metal and it turns out that the band (a UK/Russian mix) features Daniel Neagoe again on vocals! I’d already featured two of his bands before, Clouds and Eye of Solitude, and this third band is just as good and just a little different as his others. The violin (played by a guy named Casper) is featured quite prominently in the songs giving God Eat God a slight My Dying Bride-vibe.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/God_Eat_God/3540370782

https://godeatgod.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: Argentina are already through and will face either France or Ireland in the quarter finals, so I can see this being a bit of a walkover for the Pumas.

Musically I’m giving this to God eat God due to Daniel Neagoe’s involvement in the project. I’ve been impressed by his other bands and GEG are another great band to get into. (Note: I do not know/work or have any contact with Mr. Neagoe whatsoever!)

GAME 38: ITALY vs ROMANIA

KANSEIL vs BUCOVINA- BATTLE OF THE FOLK BANDS!

Kanseil are an Italian folk metal band who use bagpipes, bouzoukis and whistles alongside traditional metal instruments to meld the worlds of folk and metal into a glorious musical success. More akin to Cnoc an tursa and Forefather folk metal than Alestorm/Korpiklaani folk metal. Bonus points for singing in their native language too.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Kanseil/3540372119

https://instagram.com/kanseil_official/

https://www.youtube.com/user/KanseilOfficial

Bucovina are another new band to me and, like Kanseil, they fuse traditional folk stylings with metal to produce some great music with some wonderful vocal harmonies too. Like Kanseil, Bucovina also sing in their native language giving the songs a more ‘authentic’ feel.

https://bucovina.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Bucovina/37241

PREDICTION: Pride is all that’s left for these two teams and I belive the Italians will take this one due to their experience in the Six Nations competition.

Musically, wussing out again and calling a draw! Both bands are excellent and worth your time and money in discovering.

GAME 39: FRANCE vs IRELAND

VI vs CORR MHONA

A side project from 2 of the members of Aosoth (and the ex-drummer from Aosoth), VI play black metal that is best listened whilst naked, on all four with a piece of raw meat between your teeth and shaking your head from side to side until you start foaming and the mouth. Yeah, it’s that good!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/VI/123827

https://agoniarecords.bandcamp.com/album/de-praestigiis-angelorum

Corr Mhona (translation: the twisted thing form the bog), like their fellow countrymen Mael Mhorda and Primordial, fuse pagan folk metal/doom metal and black metal to produce a very enjoyable noise and get extra brownie points for singing in Gaelic

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Corr_Mh%C3%B3na/3540303704

https://corrmona.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: The winner of this game, and the group, will face Argentina in the next round and the second-placed team will be up against tournament favourites New Zealand, so a lot is riding on this game. Both teams will be eager to avoid the All Blacks, it will be a close, tight game but I can see Ireland edging it slightly.

Musically I’m going for VI.

GAME 40: USA vs JAPAN

PETRYCHOR vs LIFEBLOOD

From Petrychor’s website: “Black metal laced with folk, avant-garde classical, and other musical interests”, which sums it up far better than I could! If you like Aquilus, Skagos and Nhor and bands of that ilk you will get a lot of enjoyment from Petrychor.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Petrychor/3540328413

https://petrychor.bandcamp.com/

Lifeblood hail from Japan and play depressive metal/rock with touches of black metal. Only two songs are available to listen to at the moment but they’re fairly well written and produced for that style of music. Nothing earth-shattering but not bad.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Lifeblood/3540400884

https://lifebloodjp.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: Japan will finish the tournament the way they started it, with a victory. The Americans will leave this World Cup with no wins and no points.

Musically the US takes this in large parts to Petrychor’s musical abilities and fusing of different styles.

The quarter-finals start next weekend, so I’ll see you then with new bands from New Zealand, France, South Africa and Wales.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL (RUGBY EDITION) GAMES 14/15/16

GAME 14: ITALY vs CANADA

KROWNN vs WILT

Kicking off the second weekend of the Rugby World Cup I’m featuring some bands that I found on Instagram (@sufferingzappatache is my handle- check me out!).

Firstly we have Italian doom trio Krownn who, if you’re fans of Place of Skulls, Orange Goblin, Grand Magus etc, then you should not hesitate to click their bandcamp page and snap up the two albums that are available right now The riffs are heavy and contagious and the lyrics are inspired by the fantasy greats of Tolkien, Howard, etc. Also check out the guitarist’s Instagram page (@sealsofblackening) for some brilliant artwork.

https://krownn.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Kr%C3%B6wnn/3540359875

From the snowy depths of Canada (Winnipeg, Manitoba to be exact) come atmospheric black metal band Wilt who conjure up spacious, depressive  bm melodies and give the listener a real sense of bleakness and futility. There is some light amongst the shade and dark but the overall feeling is one of despair, and that’s fine with me!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Wilt/3540353837

https://wiltmanitoba.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION:

Italy defeated Canada 19-14 at the 2003 World Cup; the five-point margin was the narrowest victory Italy have recorded over Canada in their seven Tests against the Maple Leafs (W5 L2). Italy have won the last four Tests between these nations having lost two of their first three against the North American nation. Both teams suffered a defeat in their opening games and with both France and Ireland already looking like they’ve got the top two spots sewn up, it’s probably just a matter pride for these two teams and I believe the Italians will have just a little too much for their Canuck counterparts.

Musically, Krownn take the erm……..crown for Italy with their retro-doom loveliness and gorgeous riffs.

GAME 15: SOUTH AFRICA vs SAMOA

DREAMS OF NIGHTMARES vs SO HIDEOUS

Up first is South African melodic death/groove metal act Dreams Of Nightmares playing a fairly decent, no frills melodic death/groove metal. It’s nothing too spectacular and a little too much on the groove side for my liking but decent enough.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Dreams_of_Nightmares/3540401152

https://dreamsofnightmares.bandcamp.com/releases

Representing Samoa for this game will be New York orchestral/post-black metal/shoegaze act So Hideous (@sohideous on Instagram). Combining elements of G!YBE-type orchestration, hardore, shoegaze and post BM riffing and phrasing, the band are a powerful act to listen to. Occasionally there is a little too much going on in some of the songs, but when the fire mix just the right amount of their influences together it makes for a potent an heady brew a emotional, uplifting metal.

https://sohideous.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/So_Hideous/3540372881

PREDICTION:

This will be the fifth World Cup Test between these nations; the Springboks have not faced any other side more often (England also four times). South Africa won the previous four games between the sides. This will be a tough game for South Africa to try and bounce back from after their defeat to Japan. Samoa will be confident after their victory over the US and will be looking forward to keeping their winning momentum going. This will be a close game but I feel SA will just do enough to edge out the Samoans.

Musically So Hideous take the victory.

GAME 16: ENGLAND vs WALES

JUKEBOX MONKEY vs ZONDERHOOF- The Battle of the Stoner Bands!

Jukebox Monkey can be found on Instagram (@jukeboxmonkey) and are from the sunny seaside hamlet of Gravesend in the English garden that is Kent. Playing stoner metal/rock that’s similar in style to Grand Magus fronted by Maynard James Keenan , Jukebox Monkey are a powerful four piece with some amazing riffs catchy choruses and excellent songs. One to check out.

https://jukeboxmonkey.bandcamp.com/

Zonderhoof’s take on stoner metal/doom is of a more instrumental variety, with huge riffs, more emphasis on the doom aspect and killer long songs that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Church of Misery or Sleep album (and great song titles too!)

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Zonderhoof/3540287195

https://zonderhoof.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION:

These two rivals have met twice at World Cups, in 1987 and 2003, with England losing the first encounter but winning 12 years ago and each of those games were settled by significant margins, 13 and 11 points respectively. England are aiming for three straight victories over Wales for the first time since 2011 however England have lost two of their last five Tests at Twickenham against their border rivals but prior to that won 10 in a row against Wales at HQ. In their last three defeats against Wales (2011-2013), England failed to score a try, however, England have failed to score a try just once in their last 15 Tests. With the Australians also in Pool A neither team can afford to slip up and defeat for one team will probably hinder qualification into the next round. England will be favourites due to being the host nation, but the Welsh will have more than enough to counter the English. A tough game settled by a point or two and with the Welsh coming out as victors.

Musically I’m going for the draw. Both bands are excellent examples of the variety in the stoner doom/rock genre. If I was to judge it I’d probably give it to Jukebox Monkey due to the great sing-a-long choruses but it’ll be a close call.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAMES 2/3/4/5

any questions?

So it’s a bumper-filled edition today as the Rugby World Cup gets under way with FOUR games today meaning eight new bands for your sweet, delicate little lugholes.

GAME 2: TONGA vs GEORGIA

Ancient Moon are an international black metal/ambient act that have just the one album out and it only features one track, but what a track it is! Grainy tremolo riffing gives way to a cacophony of buzzing guitars and crashing drums followed by an ominous, almost Tuvan throat-like vocals which continue throughout the song. The quieter moments allow the listener a breather before the noise comes crashing back in and sweeping you away. This is a very well written piece of music and there’s enough here to keep you interested over it’s 28 minute length.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ancient_Moon/3540398265

https://satanath.bandcamp.com/album/sat109-ancient-moon-vvltvre-2015

Adramalech, hailing from Georgia, is a one-man black metal act (Veliar-all instruments) who has released several eps and albums  of varying black metal/ambient quality since 2009. Each release has seen Adramalech expand and improve his songwriting skills and range of music, making his later work a lot more of an enjoyable experience than his earlier stuff, in my opinion.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Adramalech/3540377914

PREDICTION:

Tonga have lost their first game of the Rugby World Cup in five of the six editions they have competed in, Georgia have failed to score a try in each of their three Rugby World Cup openers since debuting in 2003, losing all three of those games as well so something’s going to change after this game! Tonga will be favourites and will need a good start if they are to claim second place from Argentina and this game should be theirs for the taking.

Musically it’s also a win for Tonga as Ancient Moon’s single track is a lot more engaging than Adramalech’s work.

GAME 3: IRELAND vs CANADA

Worshiping at the Holy Altar of the Riff, Irish ne’er do wells Astralnaut play fairly enjoyable stoner rock/metal that throws nods to the usual suspects: Kyuss, Sabbath etc. Nothing ground-breaking but pretty damn fine stoner metal to bang your head to.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Astralnaut/3540346922

https://astralnaut.bandcamp.com/album/thieves-beggars-and-swine

Finnr’s Cane are an interesting bunch of Canadians. Aside from their nicknames (The Slave, the Peasant and The Bard) Finnr’s Cane’s take on atmospheric doom/black metal is a little different to these ears and that is due in part to the use of a cello instead of a bass guitar which leads to some rocking cello solo moments in the songs! Agalloch, WITTR, Drudkh, early Ulver are the reference points for Finnr’s Cane but their strong sense of melody and songwriting also set them up as their own band and not just a copy of their influences.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Finnr%27s_Cane/3540303251

https://finnrscane.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION:

Ireland have won their opening match of the last four Webb Ellis editions, scoring a combined 20 tries in these four matches. These two nations met in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1987, with Ireland running out 46-19 winners. Canada’s record in their Rugby World Cup openers is positive, they have won four and lost three but I feel that Ireland will just have too much experience and power to overcome their opponents and should be comfortable winners.

Musically, the Canadians take this one due to the inventive songwriting and rocking cello parts of Finnr’s Cane.

GAME 4: SOUTH AFRICA vs JAPAN

Firegate are an unusual band for me to feature on one of my blog posts, not because they’re a power metal act but because of their overt Christian lyrics. Now the bible and metal have quite a few lyrical themes in common: war, death, slaughter, bloodshed and some of Firegate’s songs have those themes too but they are a little more forthright in their beliefs (“Give glory to the Lord your God before it’s too late. Acknowledge Him before He brings darkness upon you, causing you to stumble and fall on the darkening mountain
where you’ll find only terrible darkness and gloom.”- subtle isn’t it?) Now the younger more head strong me would have dismissed this straight off the bat as preachy christian crap, however if I can accept bands singing about Odin, Satan, Osiris, Ra, Shiva, unicorns, goblins, Orcs, Cthulhu then why worry about yet another fictional character and his chums? Firegate’s music is pretty decent power metal; nothing too bad but nothing that makes it stand out from the crowd.  Competent musicianship and clean, strong but not powerful vocals make Firegate on ‘OK’ listen. Damned with faint praise indeed!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Firegate/3540397516

Japan’s Aeternum Sacris (yet another one-man  band) are a funeral doom metal act with ambient affectations. Lush keyboards, gothic/doom style vocals and a funeral doom pace to the songs makes Aeternum Sacris a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Aeternum_Sacris/3540284289

PREDICTION:

This game represents these nations’ first meeting at Test level. South Africa have won all their tournament openers since debuting in 1995. Japan are winless in their last 18 World Cup matches and aside from those two draws against Canada, have lost by double-figure margins in 15 of those 16 defeats. South Africa and Samoa will be firm favourites to advance from a group that also features the USA and Six Nations Wooden Spoon winners, Scotland and this game will not give the Springboks too much trouble.

Musically, Japan win this one by a country mile. It’s not the overt Christian message in Firegate’s lyrics that bother me, some of the lyrics are quite metal in places and some of them wouldn’t look too out of place in a Meads of Asphodel song. No, the problem for me is Firegate seem to be a (very) poor man’s Satan’s Host, right down to the Harry Conklin-style vocals but as we all know the devil has all the best tunes and Firegate just can’t compete. Aeternum Sacris’s music is more deeper, more developed and just hits me on a more emotional level than Firegate ever could be.

GAME 5: FRANCE vs ITALY

Atmospheric doom metal is a favourite genre of mine and France’s Ixion have becaome a new favourite band for me (I’m such a bandwagoner!) This Brittany trio produce some very lush, beautiful gothic/doom metal with the clean and the harsh vocals mixing well and the musicianship and songwriting are of a very high standard. Their last album was 2011 so hopefully some new songs will be released soon.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ixion/108420

Mourning Mist, an Italian avant-garde doom metal outfit, give a lot of prominence to the violin in their songs and it helps give the band’s music a little extra creepiness and weirdness and adds to the misanthropy. An Italian Sigh if you please.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Mourning_Mist/3540392217

https://fpr666.bandcamp.com/album/mourning-mist

PREDICTION:

This is the first Rugby World Cup meeting between these European rivals. France have won five of seven World Cup openers, losing as hosts in 2007 and drawing against Scotland in the inaugural edition in 1987. France have won three of the last five Tests between the sides, all in the Six Nations, with all those wins coming via margins of 18+ points, so it would seem that a French victory is all but assured and quite frankly I’m not going to bet against Les Bleues. Musically it’s a different ball game and although they play different styles of metal I have to give this match to the Italians just because of teh use of violins adds a n extra dimension to their sound.

WE’RE ALL DOOOOOOOMED!

I was at a loss as to what to write about once the World Cup had finished. I was racking my agile, little mind and looking back on the World Cup of Metal posts that I did (I’m such a narcissist!) and like a diamond-tipped bullet to the skull, I realised what I could write about….doom metal! There was quite a lot of doom acts featured in my posts and I loved the idea of discovering new bands from the far flung reaches of the globe, so I’m combining the two the bring you WE’RE ALL DOOOOOOOMED! (or Doom All Over The World).

So using the ‘genre’ link on the Metal-Archives site and clicking on the ‘doom’ option, I’ll be wading through the 8,456 or so band links, listening to a couple of songs or so, posting links to their bandcamp/soundcloud/myspace/youtube/official page and bringing you my dear, sweet, loyal, psychotic readers some of my favourite acts from one of my favourite genres in metal.

First up is a Croatian band called (drama) who I’ve just discovered today (yay me!) and they have one album out entitled Zastor tisine which came out in 2010 although they are still active and according to their facebook page recently supported SubRosa in June of this year in Zagreb. All the songs are sung in their native language, which I’m guessing is going to be Croatian and this doesn’t take anything away from my enjoyment of the music, in fact I’d rather hear singers in their native tongue as I feel they can convey more emotion than singing in a ‘foreign’ tongue. Musically there’s some great melodic doom riffs and some pretty tasty solos as well making quite a number of the songs sound uplifting.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/%28drama%29/108171

Staying in Europe but moving slightly westwards we arrive in Italy in the town of Brescia and to a band called (EchO) who’s album ‘Devoid of Illusions’ is available on Bandcamp and who are currently working on their follow up album. This six-piece play some great melodic death/doom metal, quite keyboard heavy and I love the mixing of the low guttural vocals and the clean vocals. There are some excellent songs on this album and I’m excited for the release of their second album, if your a fan of Swallow The Sun, Paradise Lost etc then you do need to check (Echo) out.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/%28EchO%29/3540268831

https://www.facebook.com/echoband.official/timelin

The final act in this post is from Sacramento, CA and are called (waning). This four-piece mixes doom, ambient, post-punk and shoegaze into their songs and whilst not the heaviest act I’ve featured (or will probably feature) the songs definitely have a doom-y quality to them and the contrast of the two vocalists (one male, one female) adds a little something different to the mix. (Waning)’s songs are more on the shoegaze-proggy side of things and are quite relaxing for the most part. A lighter, more gentle side of doom.

THE METAL WORLD CUP DAY NINE (NINE NINE EMERGENCY)

Day nine and now I don’t have to worry about looking for new bands for this blog from Spain, Australia, Cameroon (not they have metal bands anyway!) and Japan. And after this post I may not have to worry about England (no real surprise), Honduras and Ecuador. Annnndddd, hopefully after this world cup I can finish writing my German gay porn musical featuring the songs of Neil Diamond entitled “Hans, Touching Hans”.

ITALY vs COSTA RICA

FUOCO FATUO vs THE TOVVER

Fuoco Fatuo are a relative newcomer to the world of doom/death metal but make an excellent addition to the genre. They like to mix up the tempos and rhythms during their numbers and with a sludgy guitar sound, cavernous drumming and deep growled vocals this makes even their longest songs not outstay their welcome.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Fuoco_Fatuo/3540354366#Reviews

Instrumental funeral doom with dashes of black metal from Costa Rica, you say? Hmm sounds intriguing and it is. Whilst The Tovver ‘s first three demos are ambient/experimental noises (no as off putting as it sounds!) with spoken words from various lectures over them, their fourth demo is the one that has intrigued me most with a mixture of funeral doom and sludgy black metal (is that a thing?) and shows a band finding their feet and their place in the metal world.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/The_Tovver/3540359302#band_tab_discography

The Tovver’s bandcamp link: http://thetovver.bandcamp.com/album/demo-12

verdict: Italy take this due to better production and stronger songwriting.

SWITZERLAND VS FRANCE

TRIPTYKON vs WAY TO END

Formed after the demise of Celtic Frost, Trptykon is Tom G. Warrior’s new project and an absolute beast of a band it is.  Everything that made 2006’s ‘Monotheist’ such a great album is on display here too only cranked up even more; the riffs are monstrous beasts, the bass rumbles deep into your bones and the song exude a fury not heard from Warrior in a while.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Triptykon/3540303132

Only two albums in but French band Way To End are probably one of my favourite bands at the moment. Whilst they are a great black metal band what elevates them is their willingness to experiment with time changes (almost jazzy at some points), the various vocal styles (sometimes harsh, raspy vocals, clear tones and chants often in the same song) and a production where you actual here the bass guitar! Similar in style to Sigh, Hail Spirit Noir and Negura Bunget, Way To End are an excellent addition to the avant-garde black metal genre.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Way_to_End

verdict: this is a tough one, both are great bands and I’m going to have to go for the draw here. Can’t really split the two.

HONDURAS vs ECUADOR

WINTERSAD vs URKU

Two black metal bands from South America and two different styles.

Wintersad are a two-man ambient black metal band with lyrical themes of depression and suicide but unlike other DSBM Wintersad have some great songs and some good production so you can actually here the pain and despair clearly! It’s not really my cup of tea but the music is well made and there are some nice ambient passages to set the mood.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Wintersad/3540337384

Urku are also a two piece black metal band but play pagan black metal. This seems to be a side project because the two members of Urku are also the two members of the heavy metal band  Golden Wolf (also form Ecuador. Hey! What are the odds?) So info is scarce about Urku but the music is great and that is all that matters.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Urku/3540339122#band_tab_discography

verdict: Ecuador win this battle due to the simple philosophy put forth by the 20th Century’s greatest thinkers, Grand Funk Railroad: good singing, good playing.

THE METAL WORLD CUP DAY III HENRY V

So after living in the U.S. for the past 5 years or so, I’ve still not got used to the east coast/west coat time difference! Hence the previous post was posted after the Mexico/Cameroon game and halfway through the Spain/Netherlands game (just after Robben scored a beauty! GIRFUY Spain!) So in future I’ll try to post the posts BEFORE the games! Neat idea, eh readers? Four games, eight countries, lots of music. Let’s get intae ’em!

COLOMBIA vs GREECE

INQUISITION vs HAIL SPIRIT NOIR

Colombian giants, Inquisition are a two piece that play black metal and play it bloody well! The music is cold, brooding, grim, violent, all the usual adjectives yet what makes them really stand out is the vocals of lead singer/bassist/guitarist Dagon. A mixture of harsh, raspy vocals, Tuvan-esque throat singing and Popeye! Honestly! Yet somehow it works, listen for yourself.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Inquisition/6665#Reviews

Hail Spirit Noir are formed from the remnants of another progressive avant-garde metal band Transcending Bizarre? (the question mark is deliberate!) and have two albums to their name. Black metal mixed with 70’s rock and psychedelia and a sense of humour makes for a very satisfying listen time and time again. I love bands that takes chances and aren’t afraid to experiment and Hail Spirit Noir fit that bill majestically.

IVORY COAST vs JAPAN

Ivory Coast have no metal acts, so for your listening pleasure here is Manou Gallo and a track called Maisha taken from her 2003 album ‘Dida’

Sigh are probably the very definition of ‘eclectic’ in heavy metal circles. A band who’s ‘everything-including-the-kitchen-sink’ attitude to music is very refreshing (to my ears). They are not afraid to take chances and this fearlessness producing some excellent music and essential albums. Bands in a similar vein include Hail Spirit Noir and a great French band called Way to End (more on them soon).

URUGUAY vs COSTA RICA

REQUIEM AETERNAM vs ADVENT OF BEDLAM

I know next to nothing about either of these countries’ metal scene and I won’t pretend I will. So I picked six bands whose names I liked and decided to have at it!

RA (from Uruguay) are signed to Century Media, have three full length releases and play pretty decent melodic black/death metal. Pretty good stuff.

AoB (from Costa Rica) were originally called December’s Cold Winter (which is a cool name-no pun intended!) and changed names in 2009 and have released two albums of damn fine melodic death metal and have been a very pleasant discovery for post.

ENGLAND vs ITALY

MEADS OF ASPHODEL vs MELENCOLIA ESTATICA

Ah, the English! Has there ever been a more misunderstood and maligned nation of mongrels? For the record I’m half-English, half-Scottish, which probably explains the self-loathing! And England has been a mongrel nation since the Roman Occupation: Romans, Jutes, Britons, Angles, Saxons, Celts, Normans, Danes, bitch please! We were doing multicultralism before it went mainstream (#ethnic hipster)

Anyway the Meads are, yet again, another one of those bands that play experimental/avant garde black metal and occasional feature ex-Hawkwind guitarist Alan davey and the lead singer from Sigh. Their lyrics deal with various religious issues (particulary focusing on the crusades), war, death, biblical apocrypha and their past two releases were ‘concept’ albums about the murder of Jesus the Jew and then about the jews that were forced to work in the Nazi death camps to aid with the disposal of the gas chamber victims. All good clean fun (whatever that means)

ME hail from Italy and is the solo project of Climaxia from Absentia Lunae. Her latest album ‘Hel’ is a great slab of depressive, claustrphobic black metal and is lyrically and visually inspired by the Fritz Lang movie ‘Metropolis’ and is well worth checking out.
