THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) SEMI FINAL 2

The second semi-final of the Rugby World Cup sees the Argentinians face off against the jammy, fluky, unworthy semi-finalists Australia (can you tell I’m a bitter Scotsman?) Who will win? Well if there was any justice in the world it would be Scotland but as the world is clearly unfair I’ll be <spoiler alert!> cheering on the Pumas!

SEMI FINAL 2: ARGENTINA vs AUSTRALIA

AUSLANDER vs MYRAETH

Auslander ( a German word for foreigner) is the brainchild of producer and musician Hernan Conidi. the music is a sweet combination of epic and melodic black metal with traces of doom, post-metal and folk metal into it’s mix. His debut album is quite reminiscent of the first Ihsahn album and that’s a good enough reason to check him out!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ausl%C3%A4nder/3540401041

https://auslanderofficial.bandcamp.com/releases

Myraeth are a step above the run-of-the-mill female fronted doom/death metal acts. Less Epica/Within Temptation and more of the November’s Doom/Swallow The Sun ilk. With the sweet ethereal vocals of Samantha Kempster (who also plays violin and keyboards) mixing with the Opeth style growls of vocalist/guitarist Ryan Casey, Myraeth are a great new addition to the doom metal genre.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Myraeth/3540306195

https://myraeth.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: This is a simple one: Argentina to defeat the Aussies and hopefully by a cricket score. Yes, I’m bitter about the Scotland defeat but I won’t let it cloud my judgement….aye right!

Musically I’m going with the tie again as I’ve discovered two great new acts.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) SEMI-FINAL 1

Simples!

With only two games left before the final, it seems that someone from the Southern hemisphere is going to be crowned Rugby World Champions. Let’s find out who it’s going to be (hopefully not the Aussies!)

SEMI FINAL 1: SOUTH AFRICA vs NEW ZEALAND

SINDULGENCE vs ARC OF ASCENT

Sindulgence are an experimental metal act from Cape Town, S.A. Their music ranges from a variety of old-school Heavy Metal influences to more modern technical acts; imagine a combination of Metallica, Mastodon, Maiden, S.O.A.D and you’re got an idea of how Sindulgence sound. Not sure why they class themselves as ‘experimental’, sounds like good old fashioned metal to me and that’s alright by me.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Sindulgence/3540348425

https://sindulgence.bandcamp.com/album/recollections

Hamilton natives Arc of Ascent combine great vocals, meaty-heavy riffs and some blistering solos to bring you a glorious stoner/doom noise that will move you and groove you.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Arc_of_Ascent/3540302601

https://arcofascent.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: South Africa broke Welsh hearts with their last minute try in the quarter finals but I think beating the All Blacks will be a much sterner ask for the Springboks. Tournament favourites New Zealand will have as much difficulty dispatching South Africa as they did France ie: not much. The All Blacks for the win.

And it’s a Kiwi double as the stoner doom bliss from Arc of Ascent blows Sindulgence off course and into the jaws of defeat.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) QUARTER FINALS 3/4

Day two of the quarter finals and after wins by New Zealand and South Africa yesterday (and only one was my pick and even then they won by more than six points!), it’s up to Ireland and Scotland to keep the Northern Hemisphere flag flying into the semi-finals. Can they do it? Read on my friends………

QUARTER FINAL 3: IRELAND vs ARGENTINA

KRAWWL vs PSICOsFERA

Featuring a couple of guys who’ve played with Altar of Plagues, Krawwl are an avant-garde black metal act that are great for clearing your head after a hangover or scaring the pets. Of the two songs available on bandcamp the second track ‘And Oceans’is the standout for me: all doomy-riffs and mixing harsh screaming with Pete Steele-esque deep vocals.

https://krawwl.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Krawwl/3540374436

Psicosfera are a n instrumental atmospheric black/doom metal act with some slight prog moment in their riffs and songs. Whilst the songs are really good and the riffs are meaty and catchy, I do miss some form of vocals in the songs but I suppose you can always make you own up as the song goes along!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Psicosfera/3540401586

https://psicosfera.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: i’m going for the Irish in this game as I feel the Six Nations champions will havwe a little too much for Argentina but it will be a close game, maybe 3 points in it.

Musically I’m going for Krawwl, even though they have just 2 songs available, the lack of vocals on Psicosfera’s album cost them the win.

QUARTER FINAL 4: AUSTRALIA vs SCOTLAND

UR DRAUGR vs RAMAGE INC.

Combining doom, death, black and progressive sludge elements to their music, Australia’s Ur Draugr are a fantastic new band playing some excellent metal. Similar to Cormorant, Ur Draugr are not afraid to be pigeon-holed and willingly use different influences in their music if it will enhance the song, and it usually works to great affect.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ur_Draugr/3540390904

https://urdraugr.bandcamp.com/

Ramage Inc (great name btw) are an Edinburgh based band who play progressive metal similar in style to Devin Townsend, and their 2015 album ‘Earth Shaker’ is a fantastic slab of quality metal. Thunderous riffs, powerful vocals (courtesy of Ramage himself) and tasty solos make Ramage Inc. another quality metal act from Bonny Scotland.

https://ramageinc.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ramage_Inc./3540363122

PREDICTION: Scotland have done well in this tournament despite finishing last in the Six Nations but I feel that the Australians will have too much for the Scots and should run out comfortable winners.

Musically I’m calling a draw again! Both bands have impressed me with their work and it is difficult to choose between either as they are both high quality metal acts.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) QUARTER FINAL 1/2

Welcome to the weekend edition of Pish and Mince as the Rugby World Cup reaches the thrilling Quarter-Final stages. Can Wales progress pass the improving South Africans? Can France defeat the tournament favourites, the All Blacks? Will I be able to find more sports ball replaced by cats pictures? Only one way to find out…………….

QUARTER FINAL 1: SOUTH AFRICA vs WALES

MAD GOD vs SIGIRIYA

Not sure why god would be mad with this South African trio, as they make an unholy and glorious stoner doom racket; all heavy riffs, throbbing bass notes and wigged-out guitar solos. Quite the pleasant listening experience.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Mad_God/3540397249

https://unholyritualsep.bandcamp.com/releases

Sigiriya are a Welsh stoner doom band with a large dose of rock running through them and were formed from the ashes of Acrimony and seem to be the Principality’s answer to Monster Magnet and Orange Goblin. Big chunky riffs a-go-go, pummeling drumbeats and a vocalist who sounds like he could be in Black Stone Cherry (that’s a compliment btw). A fun time to be had by all.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Sigiriya/3540334469

https://candlelightrecordsuk.bandcamp.com/album/darkness-died-today

PREDICTION: This will be a tough one to call. South Africa started off with a loss but then had 3 straight victories to propel them to top spot of Pool B whilst Wales’s only defeat came at the hands of the Aussies and put them into second spot of their Pool. A tight game but I feel the Welsh will come out victors by three points.

Musically I’m going for a Welsh double due to Sigiriya’s song writing abilities, catchy riffs and great vocals.

QUARTER FINAL 2: NEW ZEALAND vs FRANCE

APNEA vs DUR DABLA

If black metal screeching, tremelo riffing and blastbeats mixed with lovely guitar passages and gentle ambient sounds sounds like a good time then Apnea will be right up your alley. A very impressive ep followed by a great album full of light and shade show that these guys have a good handle on the loud/quiet/loud/quiet dynamics.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Apnea/3540343582

https://bleakapnea.bandcamp.com/releases

Hailing from Brittany, France Dur Dabla  are a folk/ black metal act who use traditional folk instruments in their songs and they merge well with the Celtic legends and folklore of Brittany that is found in the lyrics. Depending on your love/tolerance of tin whistles, accordions, flutes and the suchlike in your folk metal will determine whether you like this band or not. Me? I’m firmly in the ‘like’ camp.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Dur_Dabla/3540303834

https://frenchfolkmetal.bandcamp.com/track/dremmwel

PREDICTION: Another close game but I feel the French will face an uphill battle to defeat the All Blacks. They’ll put up a good showing but I’m siding New Zealand by at least 6 points.

Musically I’m calling it a draw as I’ve come across two new bands to add to my ever growing lists of albums to buy!

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAME 37/38/39/40

The last weekend of the Pool matches features only one game that has any meaning, (especially after Scotland have nixed any chance Japan had of progressing) and that is France vs Ireland. However there’s still a shed load of great music to explore and enjoy.

GAME 37: ARGENTINA vs NAMIBIA

UNSEEN vs GOD EAT GOD

Fusing funeral doom with black metal vocals, Argentina’s Unseen takes us on quite an unpleasant journey. Glacial pace combined with huge, monolithic riffs and  mixing traditional funeral doom growls with black metal shrieks make for fun times!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Unseen/3540401151

https://dir666.bandcamp.com/album/necrospheric

I picked God Eat God for two reasons: 1) the name and 2) because they play funeral doom/death metal and it turns out that the band (a UK/Russian mix) features Daniel Neagoe again on vocals! I’d already featured two of his bands before, Clouds and Eye of Solitude, and this third band is just as good and just a little different as his others. The violin (played by a guy named Casper) is featured quite prominently in the songs giving God Eat God a slight My Dying Bride-vibe.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/God_Eat_God/3540370782

https://godeatgod.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: Argentina are already through and will face either France or Ireland in the quarter finals, so I can see this being a bit of a walkover for the Pumas.

Musically I’m giving this to God eat God due to Daniel Neagoe’s involvement in the project. I’ve been impressed by his other bands and GEG are another great band to get into. (Note: I do not know/work or have any contact with Mr. Neagoe whatsoever!)

GAME 38: ITALY vs ROMANIA

KANSEIL vs BUCOVINA- BATTLE OF THE FOLK BANDS!

Kanseil are an Italian folk metal band who use bagpipes, bouzoukis and whistles alongside traditional metal instruments to meld the worlds of folk and metal into a glorious musical success. More akin to Cnoc an tursa and Forefather folk metal than Alestorm/Korpiklaani folk metal. Bonus points for singing in their native language too.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Kanseil/3540372119

https://instagram.com/kanseil_official/

https://www.youtube.com/user/KanseilOfficial

Bucovina are another new band to me and, like Kanseil, they fuse traditional folk stylings with metal to produce some great music with some wonderful vocal harmonies too. Like Kanseil, Bucovina also sing in their native language giving the songs a more ‘authentic’ feel.

https://bucovina.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Bucovina/37241

PREDICTION: Pride is all that’s left for these two teams and I belive the Italians will take this one due to their experience in the Six Nations competition.

Musically, wussing out again and calling a draw! Both bands are excellent and worth your time and money in discovering.

GAME 39: FRANCE vs IRELAND

VI vs CORR MHONA

A side project from 2 of the members of Aosoth (and the ex-drummer from Aosoth), VI play black metal that is best listened whilst naked, on all four with a piece of raw meat between your teeth and shaking your head from side to side until you start foaming and the mouth. Yeah, it’s that good!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/VI/123827

https://agoniarecords.bandcamp.com/album/de-praestigiis-angelorum

Corr Mhona (translation: the twisted thing form the bog), like their fellow countrymen Mael Mhorda and Primordial, fuse pagan folk metal/doom metal and black metal to produce a very enjoyable noise and get extra brownie points for singing in Gaelic

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Corr_Mh%C3%B3na/3540303704

https://corrmona.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: The winner of this game, and the group, will face Argentina in the next round and the second-placed team will be up against tournament favourites New Zealand, so a lot is riding on this game. Both teams will be eager to avoid the All Blacks, it will be a close, tight game but I can see Ireland edging it slightly.

Musically I’m going for VI.

GAME 40: USA vs JAPAN

PETRYCHOR vs LIFEBLOOD

From Petrychor’s website: “Black metal laced with folk, avant-garde classical, and other musical interests”, which sums it up far better than I could! If you like Aquilus, Skagos and Nhor and bands of that ilk you will get a lot of enjoyment from Petrychor.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Petrychor/3540328413

https://petrychor.bandcamp.com/

Lifeblood hail from Japan and play depressive metal/rock with touches of black metal. Only two songs are available to listen to at the moment but they’re fairly well written and produced for that style of music. Nothing earth-shattering but not bad.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Lifeblood/3540400884

https://lifebloodjp.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION: Japan will finish the tournament the way they started it, with a victory. The Americans will leave this World Cup with no wins and no points.

Musically the US takes this in large parts to Petrychor’s musical abilities and fusing of different styles.

The quarter-finals start next weekend, so I’ll see you then with new bands from New Zealand, France, South Africa and Wales.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAME 34/35/36

As the final weekend of the Pool matches take place, there are still a few places up for grabs. Can the Japanese beat the USA and pip Scotland for second place? (‘Yes’, and ‘No’ respectively) errrr…….and that’s it really. All the places are more or less sorted and so the majority of the remaining games are for pride only so……….here a picture of some rugby players with the ball replaced by a cat.

GAME 34: SAMOA vs SCOTLAND

VOODOO GODS vs ABANDONED STARS

Voodoo Gods are an American/German/Polish combo that play some pretty damn fine death/thrash metal in a similar vein to Vader and Behemoth etc. Damn good for what ails you and the perfect soundtrack for a night of headbanging goodness.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Voodoo_Gods/3540344431

Abandoned Stars are a young Edinburgh band (with a French vocalist and an Italian drummer) who remind me a lot of Firewind, Sonata Arctica, and Stratovarius in their style of music. Heavy metal with some symphonic cheese added to the mix makes for an ideal soundtrack to practice your air guitar in front of the mirror and slightly scare the cat.

https://ouerghrecords.bandcamp.com/album/fragments

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Abandoned_Stars/3540340199

PREDICTION: Unlike the football team, Scotland’s rugby squad will have no problem progressing to the next round by dispatching Samoa quite easily.

Musically, I’m going to wuss-out and call a draw. Both bands are new to me and both bands hit the spot in different ways, which makes me a very happy bunny indeed.

GAME 35: AUSTRALIA vs WALES

AUTUMN’S DAWN vs ANESMWYTHDER

A double dose of depression for you to ……enjoy? Autumn’s Dawn features Tim Yatras (brainchild behind Germ, and ex-member of Austere and Grey Waters to name but a few) and Matthew Bell, guitarist in Bane of Isildur and Troldhaugen, and what a miserably, wonderful listening experience they bring forth! Gorgeous guitar notes, howling vocals and a sense of lovely despair permeate throughout.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Autumn%27s_Dawn/3540380018

http://records.eisenton.de/album/gone

Welsh solo act Anesmwythder is a different kettle of halibut altogether. Musically there’s some great black metal going on but it’s lyrically that sets him apart from others. Depression, dysphoria and body modification, identity issues and other personal experiences with mental illness are some of the subjects he uses for inspiration. A hard, but rewarding listening experience.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Anesmwythder/3540384139

https://anesmwythder.bandcamp.com/releases

PREDICTION: Wales need to win heavily if they are to leap-frog over the Aussies and claim top spot and although I feel they will win, it won’t be by a big enough margin and will have to settle for second spot.

Musically I’m plumping for Autumn’s Dawn slightly ahead of Anesmwythder just on musical variety alone.

GAME 36: ENGLAND vs URUGUAY

NHOR vs VERMIFORNE

I’ve said this once before and I’ll say it again: one of my favourites reasons to do these ‘World Cup’ posts is to discover new bands and new music and the six bands featured in this post are living proof of this. Take Nhor for instance.

hailing from the green fields of Herefordshire, Nhor play a sublime atmospheric/folk black metal, all quiet, chill piano parts lulling you into a dreamy state of mind, conjuring up images  beautiful fields, flowers in bloom and blue skies, until the guitars crash in and you stumble over a rotting corpse or two. Fans of Alcest will enjoy Nhor’s stuff as will fans of Aquilus.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Nhor/3540333774

https://nhor.bandcamp.com/

Vermifone are a different band entirely. Like Sabbath riffs? Enjoy sludgey-doomy goodness? Would you like a crazed Uruguayan sinisterly shouting at you for no reason? Then this is the band for you!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Vermiforme/3540390142

PREDICTION: Both teams have nothing to play for in this game, so I’m going to pick Uruguay just for shits and giggles.

Musically I’m picking Nhor and I’m off to discover his back catalogue on Prophecy Records. As the old advert goes “Nhor- he’s got the Nhor-how!”

(crap joke so here’s another picture of a rugby player holding a kitty!)

awwwwww!

WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAME 33

Wait, the world didn’t end? You mean I got drunk for nothing??? Oh great! Now I gotta do another post!

Welcome Survivors of the End of the World (TM) to a post-apocalyptic Pish and Mince post about the Rugby World Cup. Only one game today, so what better way to celebrate surviving yet another end-of-the-world prediction than with some Viking metal for our ears!

GAME 33: NEW ZEALAND vs TONGA

JORMUNGANDR vs  KARKAV

And where better to start our Viking metal journey than……..New Zealand?  Jormungandr, a four-piece from Wellington, are a relatively new band with just the one album of pretty decent Bathory-inspired metal that sounds like it could have been recorded in 1985. The drums are a little flat but the riffs are solid, the songs are really good and a head-banging, horn-throwing, beer-swilling good time is guaranteed for all.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/J%C3%B6rmungandr/3540400945

https://jormungandrnz.bandcamp.com/releases

Karkav are also a new band with just the one demo out at the moment but they do have a bit a pedigree behind them. Formed by Auztaroth Dragon (Warlord), Funes, and Hildr Valkyrie (Hildr Valkyrie, Folkearth,Folkodia, etc.) in May 2015 they play a more keyboard-orientated style of Viking metal plus the addition of Hildr Valkyrie’s vocals gives the songs more shadow and light.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Karkav/3540398277

PREDICTION:

Is anyone really crazy enough to pick against the All Blacks? Not me!

Musically, although Jormungandr are quite enjoyable and will get a lot better as they progress, I have to give the nod to Karkav for producing a more polished and varied take on the genre.

WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAME 31/32

Uh-oh! Will I survive another end of the world prediction?

GAME 31 SOUTH AFRICA vs USA

VINTERSLAV vs OBSEQUIAE

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Vinterslav/3540296278

Vinterslav (Swedish for ‘winter slave’) are a South African black metal combo that deal in BM of the ‘raw’ kind. Blastbeats, tremelo riffing and harsh vocals all lead you to believe the lads are wandering the snowy-capped mountains of some Scandinavian countryside rather than kicking back and enjoying the sunny beaches of Cape Town. However the music is good, a tad formulaic at times but still an enjoyable stab at an oversaturated genre.

A change of pace with this next band, Obsequiae: it’s still black metal but it uses melody which seems to be influenced by medieval music and they even use a medieval harp on some of their songs on their latest album. The melodies and the instrument give the songs an ‘authentic’ feel to them rather than some hokey, sub-par ‘folk metal’ band you’d see at Wacken.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Obsequiae/3540290073

http://listen.20buckspin.com/album/aria-of-vernal-tombs-2

PREDICTION:

South Africa will be heavy favourites as they still atop Pool B facing a US side that have no victories in this World Cup. The Springboks for the victory.

Musically the US take this one due in large part to Obsequiae’s use of medieval melodies and harp to produce some truly outstanding black metal.

GAME 32: NAMIBIA vs GEORGIA

FORESTFATHER vs  ENNUI

Forefather are comprised of two Americans and one Chilean and play atmospheric black metal with some folk influences that will have the fans of Agalloch, WITTR, Alcest etc curious to discover them ( and I include myself in this list!) One difference of Forestfather and other bands of this genre is the use of clean vocals, which are used predominantly in the songs and can take a little getting used to but worth it in the end.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Forestfather/3540367025

https://forestfather.bandcamp.com/

A change of pace for this next band representing Georgia. Ennui are a Georgian duo that play funeral doom metal, full of deep, growling vocals, heavy-as-a-mountain-and-twice-as-mobile riffs and some sublime guitar solos and excellent guitar interplay that pushes home the despair and grief the band are singing about.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ennui/3540353754

https://ennui-funeral.bandcamp.com/

PREDICTION:

Both teams will be going home from the tournament no matter what the result today. Georgia have been quite a nice surprise in this World Cup and I can see them beating the Namibians quite handily.

Musically the contest goes to the Georgians again. Ennui are an excellent funeral doom metal act similar in style to Evoken, and that’s good enough for me!

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL (RUGBY EDITION) 2015 GAME 29/30

The famous French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (“Jean-Paul Sartre? One of the best centre-forwards West ‘Am ever ‘ad! By sheer mind power alone he could get the ball into the back of the net! Dead ball situation? Fackin’ ‘ell! He could fackin’ prove the fackin’ ball didn’t fackin’ exist!”) once said “Hell is other people”. He was only partially right, because in this day and age hell is not necessarily other people (and a cracking tune by popular beat combo Half Man Half Biscuit) but it can also be computer failures during the middle of a bloody rugby world cup! And this is the reason why I’ve not been able to update this blog for around a week or so! My loyal hamster, Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, has finally kicked the bucket* (a long shot I know) after seven years of faithful service and so I’ve had to search high and low for a new companion to help complete this mission, and I am proud to announce a new fully-functional hamster I’ve named Toby Gruntsplatter and fired up with a mixture of Red Bull, Rockstar and Monster that I have labelled Red Rockster, we are now fully equipped to continue to seek out and explore strange new bands and new music, to boldly go where no hamster has gone before! So to apologise to my loyal readers (Mrs and Mrs Loyal, 22A Glenrothes Lane, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. Hello Rab and Mary!) here’s a picture of some cute goats!

Yeah, we know we’re cute mofos!

GAME 29: CANADA vs ROMANIA

WILT vs SUNSET IN THE 12TH HOUSE

Wilt hail from the Great Cold North, Manitoba to be exact, and play an atmospheric black metal that seems to encompass the glacial, frozen Canadian countryside and conjures up images of a giant moving slowly through the snowy forests.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Wilt/3540353837

https://wiltmanitoba.bandcamp.com/

A side-project of the guitarists from Dordeduh, Sunset in the 12th House are an instrumental psychedelic post-rock act full of atmosphere, superb musicianship and fantastic songs.great album to kick back and relax to or to help inspire you in front of the canvas.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Sunset_in_the_12th_House/3540397432

https://sunset-in-the-12th-house.bandcamp.com/releases

PREDICTION:

Seeing as both teams have been eliminated, both teams are winless and it’s just pride they are playing for, this should be a pretty open game and seeing as it’s Canada’s last game in the competition, I would imagine there will be a little more of a will to win from the Canucks.

Musically I’m going for Sunset in the 12th House for producing, seemingly from nowhere, one of the best albums of 2015, full of great riffs and blistering guitar solos.

GAME 30: FIJI vs URUGUAY

ENSHINE vs ABYSSAL DIMENSION

Enshine are a Swedish/French duo who play a very lovely style of melodic death/doom metal recalling such great bands like Swallow The Sun, Insomnium and Daylight Dies. Beautiful melodies, great riffs and superb songs makes them a band to check out tout suite!

https://enshine.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Enshine/3540364642

Representing Uruguay is melodic death metal act Abyssal Dimension and pretty decent they are too. Not going to win too many awards for originality but catchy riffs, a good sense of melody and some cracking songs gets a thumbs up from me.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Abyssal_Dimension/3540394868

PREDICTION:

Once again, both teams are eliminated from the tournament, both teams are winless and it’s Fiji’s last game of the competition, I’m getting a Groundhog Day feeling from this game. Fiji have been unlucky not to record a win against three of the strongest teams in the group and I think they will have no problem picking up their first win against a very poor Uruguayan side.

Musically the Fijians can thank the Swedish/French collaboration of Enshine for their victory today.

*No hamsters were harmed during the making of this blog although a few guinea pigs got there feelings hurt.

THE WORLD CUP OF METAL 2015 (RUGBY EDITION) GAME 17/18/19

GAME 17: AUSTRALIA vs URUGUAY

THADDAEUS vs APLANADORA

Thaddaeus are (now) a three piece funeral doom act with traces of gothic doom, ambient married with some lovely classical/orchestral music to push the band above the likes of others in this genre. Similar to some of Dis Pater’s many guises, Thaddaeus’ vocals are reminiscent of Nick Cave and this is what makes me tingle inside!

https://thaddaeusband.bandcamp.com/

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Thaddaeus/3540382238

From Uruguay come Aplanadora, who’s first album featured six Sabbath songs and was called ‘Tributo a Black Sabbath’ so it’s no surprise to discover who they are influenced by! Good old fashioned no-frills meat and potatoes 80’s metal that’s just bloody good fun!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Aplanadora/110631

PREDICTION:

This will be the first meeting between the two nations; Australia are the only Tier One nation that has not had a XV that has faced Uruguay in a Test match. Australia have won five of their last six Tests, this after suffering defeat in six of their seven games before that. After Wales’ victory over England, Australia will be looking to exploit an English defeat and take second (and maybe first) spot and I believe that The Wallabies will do this.

Musically, although Aplanadora are great fun and are a solid metal act however, due to the more textured layers of Thaddaeus’ music I’m giving this win to them.

GAME 18: SCOTLAND vs USA

TRANSCENSION vs ARES KINGDOM

Transcension are a bunch of hairy-arsed Scotsmen from the sunny shores of Greenock (which is a quaint fishing village on the Clyde!) playing some fantastic melodic death metal and with the twin guitar sound and clean vocals they give the songs a power metal/Thin Lizzy-‘Celtic’ feel to them which is very refreshing and something that makes me a fan of their music. Only one album at the moment but damn the quality of the songs make me excited to hear more from these guys!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Transcension/3540398844

Ares Kingdom have been around since 1997 featuring two members of black/trash metal act Order From Chaos. They’ve been releasing consistently great music since 2003 and have a new album out this year………so why I have only just heard about them now? Probably because I’m a freaking idiot! Anyhoo, Ares Kingdom are an excellent death/thrash metal act, in the vein of Bolt Thrower/Hail of Bullets/Blasphemic Cruelty, who many of you will probably be familiar with, for those (like me) who may not know them, i suggest just clicking the youtube link and listen to some amazing metal!

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ares_Kingdom/10670

PREDICTION: Scotland have won all four meetings between the two nations by an average margin of 33 points and I can’t see anything from the USA to make it 5 wins for Scotland and see the Scots retake first place in the Group.

Musically this is very exciting for me. as I’ve discovered two great new bands, even if one of them has been around for a while! Both bands play different variations of death metal: Transcension are more melodic and ‘Celtic’ influenced whilst Ares Kingdom are more experienced, heavier and nastier but both bands have released excellent music. In the end experience wins out for Ares Kingdom (I’m off to buy the new album as soon as I get paid and catch up on their previous stuff) but as for Transcension the future’ looks really bright for them and I’l be hunting down their album too! (See! I don’t always sit on the fence!)

GAME 19: IRELAND vs ROMANIA

SONUS MORTIS vs INDIAN FALL

One of the pleasures of doing these posts is that I get to discover so many new bands and some great music from all over the world and here’s another band I’m thrilled to have found. Kevin Byrne is the brains behind twisted, noisy, symphonic death/doom metal act Sonus Mortis. Aggressive, harsh yet melodic, mixing the power of Aanal Nathrakh with some heavy DM riffs, cool gothic doom passages and nasty vocals makes this a great listening experience.

Romanian metal Indian Falls play atmospheric death/black metal in a similar style to Old Man’s Child, full of melody, great riffs and excellent songwriting.

PREDICTION:

The Irish have won all 14 games against non-Tier one opposition in the Rugby World Cup; those 14 wins have come by an average margin of 30 points. Ireland defeated Romania by 30 and 28-point margins at the 1999 and 2003 editions of this tournament respectively. the Romanians will probably give the Irish more of a test than the Canadians did but not much more. Ireland for the win.

Musically the Irish will take this again though Indian Fall are no slouches, I just felt more moved by Sonus Mortis.
