Wait, the world didn’t end? You mean I got drunk for nothing??? Oh great! Now I gotta do another post!
Welcome Survivors of the End of the World (TM) to a post-apocalyptic Pish and Mince post about the Rugby World Cup. Only one game today, so what better way to celebrate surviving yet another end-of-the-world prediction than with some Viking metal for our ears!
GAME 33: NEW ZEALAND vs TONGA
JORMUNGANDR vs KARKAV
And where better to start our Viking metal journey than……..New Zealand? Jormungandr, a four-piece from Wellington, are a relatively new band with just the one album of pretty decent Bathory-inspired metal that sounds like it could have been recorded in 1985. The drums are a little flat but the riffs are solid, the songs are really good and a head-banging, horn-throwing, beer-swilling good time is guaranteed for all.
Karkav are also a new band with just the one demo out at the moment but they do have a bit a pedigree behind them. Formed by Auztaroth Dragon (Warlord), Funes, and Hildr Valkyrie (Hildr Valkyrie, Folkearth,Folkodia, etc.) in May 2015 they play a more keyboard-orientated style of Viking metal plus the addition of Hildr Valkyrie’s vocals gives the songs more shadow and light.
Is anyone really crazy enough to pick against the All Blacks? Not me!
Musically, although Jormungandr are quite enjoyable and will get a lot better as they progress, I have to give the nod to Karkav for producing a more polished and varied take on the genre.
