ARGENTINA vs SWITZERLAND
SKILTRON vs MORRIGU
Power/Celtic folk metal seems to be an unusual genre for Argentinian bands to be playing yet there are at least two bands sailing those seas. One of them, Triddana, features 4 ex-members of Skiltron, the band I’m featuring, and both feature bagpipes, whistles, heavy metal and songs about the Scottish Rebellion, freedom and the such-like. As you’d expect, the music is power/folk metal (think Tyr and Korpiklanni) mixed in with bagpipes and whistles (think Alestorm but less pirate-y), in fact come to think of it there is a well known German band that sings about Scotland, the Clans and the such, so if you like Running Wild, the sound of bagpipes and metal (and I do) then Skiltron fits the bill.
Switerland’s Morrigu play melodic death/doom metal that is akin to Amorphis and features a guitarist and a drummer who both used to be in Eluveitie. The playing is excellent and the music superb and although there are a host of other bands out there playing in a similar style, Morrigu have enough talent and quality songs to stand out.
verdict: On the pitch the Argentinians will have to much power for the Swiss to withstand on so they will advance to the Quarter Finals, however musically I’m calling it a draw as I really do like both bands and what they do.
BELGIUM vs USA
INSANITY REIGNS SUPREME vs MARE COGNITUM
IRS (now there a set initials!) play death/doom metal in it’s purest form. No acoustic interludes, keyboards or ethereal female vocals; just slow paced, filthy guitars and growled vocals and songs to bring the despair out in you. Lovely stuff!
Mare Cognitum is another one man atmospheric black metal act that I discovered whilst stumbling around Bandcamp. The playing, production and the songwriting is spectacular; the light and shade he uses inn each song is truly wonderful veering from straight up black metal to ambient Floydian instrumental passages and back again and he is fast becoming one of my favourite BM acts about.
verdict: I’m going for a USA double here with the USA team winning it on penalties.
